Hi Anyone out there know where you can buy machine head tuners for German mandolins? Several under repair, but difficult to find side fitting tuners.:mandosmiley:
Anyone out there know of the woods types used on the parquetry/marquetry backs of German mandolins, such as musima. Particularly the light brown coloured wood.
Thanks for that, but is yellow or King billy pine the same as pitch pine. I have a production German Mandolin, probably Misuma from Saxony(as it was) which possibly has a pitch pine soundboard. It's a...
Hi everyone. Does anyone know of a builder/maker using pitch pine for their soundboards?
Yes on an old bowl back. Are now using one from an Il Globo on my 1930's flatback, and it does seem to reduce unecessary vibrations when playing loudly. Thanks for the info.
Does anybody know the purpose/fun:grin:ction of the thin piece of tortoiseshell often woven in the strings between the bridge and tailpiece?
Thanks for that Jim.I'm a little late in replying. The only reason I asked is because having made a new De Meglio style bridge, I dicovered that on the first strings there is a slight...
The trouble is that the wood has to be stained first with a light spirit stain and I previously sealed the surface with cellulose spray. There is no doubt that French polish highlights the grain...
Has anyone tried sealing the inlaid table(MOP) with acrylic spray lacquer before french polishing. Don't want to use cellulose spray-1930's flatback.
Does anyone know how the brass wire/rod is fitted to the bridge. Are the ends recessed slightly and the wire sprung? Is there a narrow trough for the wire?
Hole under tailpiece on both flatbacks and bowlbacks.
I've found this hole , about 1/4" dia on both flatbacks and bowlbacks, under the tailpiece near the top.
Does anyone know why, when taking off the tailpiece of different mandolins, then is a hole drilled through the rib and end block?(Dave Hinds will hopefully, know the answer)
Hi Jim. Thanks for the info. Your plywood cradle with wooden angled clamps for holding the top down while gluing, is brilliant. Just taking a deep breath before I cut through at the 10th fret!! This...
Hi John thanks for the info and pic. However, my simple brain can not work how you can use this device assuming work is being done on the top!?
Hello all you luthiers out there. Just wondered how you hold a bowlback to work on the top, to stop it moving, but also supporting the neck. Also how do you support the neck for re-fretting the...
If anyone has a problem with a 'slipping' Bowlback Mandolin, here's my solution. What you need is a piece of soft rubber matting(I use a slice off an old car inner tube, duly washed with the contact...
Thanks for your swift replies. Have been using GDAD on both Mandola & Mandolin for a few years, and thinking I should really change to GDAE for ease of playing top notes. It's difficult. Some tunes...
Hi all Anyone out there using GDAD tuning on the Mandolin, Mandola & Banjo. If so how do you like it?
Thank you all for your comments. It seems that 'Guitar' Pro have got it wrong, so will persist with them to get their standard tuning changed.(perhaps that's why there are frequent updates). 'Guitar...
Hi out there,
Is the Mandolin tuning the same as the fiddle, that is G3,D4,A4, E5. If it is then there is problem with Guitar Pro 6, which is an excellent program, but the tuning appears to be...
