  1. Re: Best piece of advice you've learned here at The Cafe

That I should spend less time on the Cafe' and more time practicing. Of course, that's advice I haven't actually followed, but it's still the best!

    - The mandolinist formerly known as "Mando...
  2. Re: Will someone explain radiused fingerboards to me?

Everyone has different preferences based on their hands, their playing style, etc. There is no right or wrong. There are more factors than just radius also: there is compound radius vs. a consistent...

    Re: MandoBorg: Resistance Is Futile

The implants would be on your mandolin: An armrest and a Tone-Gard for sure, a clip-on tuner and pickguard optional, but a capo will get you ejected from the collective into deep space.

    Re: I made a Bobo(Stringing a Mandolin)

I used to use the Ford method, but once I started using the Cartwright method, I've never gone back. It's not only quicker to string, it's quicker to un-string the next change. I do about a wind and...
  5. Re: Mike Marshall's ArtistWorks School of Mandolin Interview

I have been signed up with Mike on AOB for about 9 months. I really enjoy it and I'm not much of a bluegrasser. A few points:

    1. Mike's lessons are not exclusively bluegrass. He also does some...

Re: Sony mini disc to computer

I won't go so far as to say I hate Sony, but I have to agree they went way too far with copy-protection technology on the minidisc and they were not up-front with the consumer about how extensive it...

Re: Find what you love and let it kill you.

I generally like to read these "I followed my passion and became a success at it" stories. I'm clear that I will not take that kind of path in life. That is a choice I've made and I'm comfortable...
  8. Re: Getting Serious About Learning & Need Advice

NFI, I strongly recommend the ArtistWorks Academy of Bluegrass online with Mike Marshall. The unique video exchange approach essentially offers you individual lessons with Mike, on your schedule, at...

Re: Sony mini disc to computer

I'm wondering if an issue here is that the mini disc is a digital format and transferring via the line in will be an analog operation. So if the OP recorded originally from LP records to mini disc...
  10. Re: Does anybody on this forum prefer a pick that is not a bluech

My choice would be a Starpic, made from pieces of the 4 billion-year-old Gibeon meteorite. They are $4,600 apiece (I'm not kidding), but I can't afford one.

    So I settle for genuine...

Re: Which mandolin album inspired you?

I was inspired by two self-published albums on cassette by the Ill-Mo Boys featuring the great Curtis Buckhannon. Those were the albums that made me think, "I want to play like THAT!" Both albums are...

    Re: Bush for Senator

Yep, the Cafe' does this kind of thing every April 1. This is an April Fool's prank. That's why this thread hasn't been locked down and why there is no independent confirmation on the rest of the...

    Re: Instrument Cables

I am no expert, but I was having cable problems with a couple of different generic cables. I shelled out for a Mogami and haven't had any problems since. Could I have spent less and gotten the same...

    Re: Travel mandolin

I travel by airline every week Mon-Thurs for business and have for many years. Try getting a full-size regular mandolin in a 22" roll-aboard suitcase. It will not fit, not even close. Then consider...

Re: Warm mist vs cool mist humidifiers

I have two room humidifiers: A Venta mist-type (with both warm and cool modes) and a Honeywell evaporation type. The Venta works great and has a pretty accurate humidistat on it. But I get white dust...

Re: How Come they don't have mandolin jokes?

I make that joke as someone who has used capos on my mandolins many times and may use them again sometime. But no, I don't park in handicapped spots!

Re: Is OM right for me?

Ditto. There are some really cool double-stop chords up the neck, especailly for power chords (so-called "X5" chords). I have not really seen chord charts for them. I had to just figure them out. For...

Re: How Come they don't have mandolin jokes?

    A: Ask your doctor...

Seriously, It seems like there are two problems here. Strings that feel flabby and getting clean tone. The first is a function of the string gauges....

  22. Re: Twin Sister mandola with Queen's Polka mandolin

Great idea, great playing! It really sounds good.

It's funny about tune titles, though. I play a tune called "Twin Sisters" and it is a completely different tune than the one you're doing. Nothing...
  23. Re: Capo - Banjo (Paige Clik) Mandolin - Radius - Wide

I use one on my OM. In the past, I have used a cut-down Kyser guitar capo and a Shubb mandolin capo. All are good, but I like this Paige Clik the best of the three.

    Preamp for Rigel and K&K
