but...but...but..there is a distinct bulge on the peninsula(fretboard extension) of the mando on the cover of his book..I doubt if modifiers would reproduce that...?? Maybe a Loar but not his...?
I havn't read all the posts here, but isn't that a Loar on the cover of Jack Tottle's Bluegrass Mandolin book? presumably owned by Jack. I never did get through everything in that book, but it sure...
Just to chime in on are there any bad sounding Loars? it seems obvious that there wouldn't be, as a Loar, by definition, had to pass through Loar's hands and be tested by him before it hit the...
I took my Eastman 515, A5 Bing and fiddle (on separate occasions) to Nugini and Thailand ... it was hot and humid and often played them out of the ac with no ill affects. I carried it on the plane...
Are all oval hole F's made with the fretboard glued directly to the soundboard. Has anyone made one with it elevated ala F5 and does it make a difference to the tone?
What's peoples' opinions on this new recording? I like it! but havn't heard it all yet...don't much go for the Ronnie hairstyle change to the 'Bieber look', but the music is the important bit.
What tuning is Doyle using for Greenbriar Hop? Its a bit Get Up John..ish...
I saw Mike perform last saturday night in Fremantle WA, which is probably his last concert before heading home to the US. He did a solo spot and then was joined by local BG Group, Bluegrass Parkway....
Well maybe he has had nothing commercially successful, but the intention was probably there on previous endeavours..this one though I doubt would have little expectation of making dough. But judging...
I've listened , I've watched, I'll buy it...imho the best most listenable Chris Thile thing done in years...because there's a lot of BG there. Now that's probably the Kiss of death sales-wise and I...
yes, Sparks's guitar playing is unique in that it sounds simple but when I try to figure out the notes he's playing it surprises me how he does it fluidly...often big jumps in note selection. Bit...
yes its all becoming clear now...Myer's was parodying the Prisoner in that toilet scene when he killed the Irish assassin...nothing to do with picks, but Myer's may have had a blue chip pick in his...

Does anyone know of mandolins made of plastic or fibreglass or graphite...apart from Ovation. I saw one once but can't remember where it was from or what the material was. It was good quality and...
is that weird or what? She didn't ask who number 2 worked for did she?
I too love fiddle music for its strong expressiveness and versatility in any form, but play mandolin becuse its easier to make the right notes than playing the fiddle. I do admire those fiddlers who...
now that was fabulous. Much better to have a strong melodic theme than just to do improvisational licks at rapid speed..truly listenable repetitively.
Chris seems to have removed some of the...
maybe you could try adding some Danish oil to it and see if iy helps the drying process.
I had the same problem many years ago and swore I'd never use it again. it just took ages to dry...several weeks. I found a product called Danish oil which is reputably tung oil and something else....
sorry to hear about Hazel. Gives us all hope. ...But where is it stated that this forum is about bluegrass? It is a mandoln forum..isn't it?
yeah... probably his rendition of Choro for Shadow (Mandolin 2000, MelBay) is my favourite all time listening tune...never get sick of it. Then he and Wayne Benson tend to get overlooked as favouites...
I think that is a good point. But if Monroe could have patented his 'style' then he would have made a fortune off all of those groups who copied it..This was a bone of contention apparently in the...
