    Re: Finding shops in California

Billy Packard: The $800-$1,600 range. Something I can grow with for a very long time. I certainly have long outgrown this wretched $70 Chineese jobber I was gifted. But poverty will make a man cling...

    Finding shops in California

By the end of this summer at latest, I'll have saved up enough to get a serious mandolin.

Haven't been sure how to track down the stores though. I'm hoping there's at least a couple of shops left...

Re: If I liked this Loar, what else might I like?

Thanks for the varied feedback! It helps!

@MikeEdgerton : Oops. I do not recall correctly. Whatever it was, had a very recognizable brand name, gorgeous tone, a hefty pricetag, and the tiniest...

If I liked this Loar, what else might I like?

If I enjoyed this Loar 600, what other mandolins might I enjoy?

In the market for an upgrade as I've far outgrown this dreadful $80 thing. Frets are worn down uneven as well. Ick.

    Went to the...
  5. Re: Opposite Way - first work tape - suggestions appreciated

My take, you could go a long fun way in terms of arrangement. :)

Kit drummer, brushes, a nice standup bass. Clarinets, trumpets, trombones. Especially clarinets I should say.

Re: Are you near Fresno? I am.

I had forgot I had an account here.... I'll check these groups out.
  7. Re: Thoughts on borrowing a mandolin for a recording session....

In Fresno, CA. Where very few people seem to know what a mandolin is.

I just typed and deleted several disparaging comments about Fresnans in general. It's been a long week of seeing the cesspool...
  8. Thoughts on borrowing a mandolin for a recording session....

Because I have one of those $80 made in China jobbers that is absolutely awful, and can't afford to purchase a mandolin.

So, provided I find a fellow mandolin player who would be willing to loan...

Re: Crash course in string choice

@Willie. Agreed. If I can find a willing person, I'd much rather borrow a decent mandolin for recording. I know what I play on is a turd. However, not being able to pay rent, a new mandolin isn't in...

Re: Crash course in string choice

I've been using a Dunlop XH (extra heavy, I think it's a 1mm) guitar pick, with a round corner down and the pointy end towards my palm. They are, however, getting rather chewed up at this point as I...

Re: Crash course in string choice

Embarrassingly, it's one of those $80 made in China deals, and its intonation is godawful. It was a gift years ago and I never played seriously until now.

    A-style f-hole "Johnson" brand. If I can,...

    Crash course in string choice

As I'm getting more serious about mandolin, and as studio recording time looms, I need to learn about string choice and fast.

Problem is, where I live mandolin strings are all special order items....

Re: Are you near Fresno? I am.

Where do they hide? I've met one, who had less experience than me and that was saying something.

Are you near Fresno? I am.

Thinking I may be alone in this one....

    Fresno CA? Anyone?

Re: Right hand technique: where is the motion?

    I'll answer questions in order.

I'll play seated or stood, depending on what's going on. Come performance time I will be standing. Context is an alt-country band that's being formed. I have a...

Right hand technique: where is the motion?

When doing cross picked runs, does the motion come from the wrist or from the elbow?

I've run into a speed-wall at a pretty slow speed. I normally pick from the wrist with my wrist parked out on...
