Re: Who's going to Rockygrass 2016?

I'm getting in line at Bohn Park on Wednesday and will be there for the duration. Camping on site. Definitely up for jamming. Text 505-379-1732.

    Re: RIP Pete Huttlinger

Oh my. That is very sad news. Pete was a wonderful finger-style guitarist and one of my favorite performers at Winfield over several years. I love his Naked Pop album. Great versions of Steely Dan's...

Re: Sitar like whang on one open E string

Hi Don. I've dealt with this before very simply and effectively by putting a small piece of Kleenex tissue under the string at the nut. Then when you tighten the string, just peel away the excess.

    Re: Walnut Valley Mandolin Winners

That was the song he played after he was announced as the winner, basically a showcase piece, not part of the competition.

    Re: Walnut Valley Mandolin Winners

I was there and recorded the finals and winners on my phone (so nothing fancy there). Anyway, see if this works. I uploaded the files to Soundcloud and made them accessible to all. Go to...

    Re: Marty Stuart on NPR

I first saw Marty play in 1978 at Beanblossom with Lester Flatt's band. Guessing he was about 14 or 15. He was the mandolin player in the band. I had just started playing mandolin a few months before...

    Re: Stolen mando

My stomach retches when I hear this happen again. Mike (I guess Doug), you are on the right track. The cafe is the premiere clearinghouse for mandolin info. Try using other internet, social media and...
  8. Re: Lost or Stolen: Stolen: John Sullivan A Model, All Black, Ver

Fantastic! I know how you must be feeling - Great! What a blessing to recover another of John's instruments. And much credit must be given to Scott and the Cafe for providing this valuable central...
  9. Re: John Hamlett is my hero! Sully resurrected again

As requested, here are some shots of the instrument right after the damage occurred. Now that I look at them again, I think it's one of those cases where the pictures don't really do it justice....
  10. John Hamlett is my hero! Sully resurrected again

You may recall that Sully was stolen from me back in '09, and against all odds, I managed to get him back. Then last July another tragedy occurred. A leak in my secure storage area (during the...

    Re: lubricating the nut

My local repair man recommended powdered PTFE (Teflon). You can get it at a hobby store pretty cheap. Works great and doesn't make a mess. Just squirt into the grooves with the needle applicator....

    Re: Ibanez help

I have an old Ibanez mandolin that I bought new in 1978. It has the serial number G768045. It was my first F-5 mandolin. As I recall I think it retailed for about $535 at the time. It looks very...

    Re: Pearl nut vs Bone

My 1981 Monteleone GA came with a pearl nut, and it was really nice looking, but I eventually started having trouble with a bit of a "twangy" sound from the unwound strings. I presume they weren't...

    Re: Peterson SC-1 Stroboclip Tuner

They are advertised as currently available for $69.99 at Elderly and Musicians Friend. Sounds like they haven't landed in any mandolin players hands yet (at least the ones here). I might just have to...

  17. Re: Sam Bush to do new Homespun DVD lesson - your input?

Sam does it all superbly well, but one of my favorite aspects of his playing is his blues stylings. I would love to see him impart some of his knowledge on bluesy bluegrass playing.

Thanks Guys. The information was very helpful. And I stand corrected on the description, definitely Neapolitan was the word I should have used. My own guesstimate on value was maybe a couple of...

Looking for info on "The Adams" mandolin

I am posting this as a favor for the owner. She is an elderly lady (in her 70's or 80's) who has this old mandolin that has been in her family for over a hundred years. It was played by her late...

Re: The Nightmare is over - Monty's Back!

Re: The Nightmare is over - Monty's Back!

No signs of the jewelry Bill, or the $1,000 worth of microphones or the camcorder. I figure that the jewelry and electronics are a lot easier to fence and that all that stuff was liquidated for cash...

Treasures definitely. I didn't realize how emotionally important my mandolins were to me until they were gone (stolen). I felt like my heart had been ripped out and suffered serious depression. I...

The Nightmare is over - Monty's Back!

Re: Great News - Sully's Back!

What had I been playing before Sully's return? I had a couple of loaners for awhile. Bill Bussman loaned me Ezra's F-5 ("The One") and a friend loaned me his Gibson Sam Bush. Then I picked up the...
