Here are some more pics of the back of the headstock and neck, which will show why I thought it was all original. If it was a replacement neck, or headstock veneer, or inlays, it was done shortly...
Here is a unique Gibson Ajr with a Gibson logo and flower pot inlay. The owner says it is from 1921 but the serial number is not legible. Has anyone seen an Ajr with this headstock treatment? I am...
Awesome post Dan!
I have owned and/or played countless examples of oval A's from the teens and Loar period and I agree with what others have previously stated. Of course, each instrument will...

Thanks for your input fellas.
A friend of mine has a mandolin that has been passed down through the family. It was his wife's grandfathers. There are no markings on it anywhere that he could find so I am wondering if anyone can...
This is almost a set of D'ad J73 lights, except the G is .038". I think I will try a set of J73's on my '13 Gibson H1 (~15 3/4" scale) and see what happens with it tuned like a mandolin.
Great playing Kevin...nice rhythm and I really like those tunes. That is indeed a fantastic sounding mandolin.
I was in Nashville a few days ago and stopped by Gruhn for a visit with this mandolin (the 1923 A-4 paddlehead, Gruhn inventory #MF8153). It is just as good as the thread subject 1922 that jaimo now...
Like Dagger said, a good cittern (or any cittern for that matter) is hard to find. You won't find any for $250-300 and might have trouble finding one in the $1K range. You might try taking a cheap...
Thanks for posting James. I like the snakewood tuner buttons. Sort of reminds me of the coffee colored buttons on a few of the mid 20's Waverly's.
That's somewhat standard repair work and you should be able to find someone local to do it. You may be able to fix the buzz on the tail piece without having to replace it. Have you tried dampening...
The Dude is in Maryville. Jean Horner is in Rockwood. There are many good repairman across the region that can do routine work such as set ups, fret work, and the like. What is it you want done?
I agree. I have a '21 A-2 with an aluminum bridge. It has a nice balanced tone and it's very loud but the aluminum bridge gives it just a hint of metallic overtones which I don't care for. I would...
Thanks for the description of the '23 Michael. I kind of figured it would sound like the '22 that jaimo is now the proud owner of.
Yes the two rooms are very different tonally. The main room...
Charles Johnson has three saaaawweeeeet ones for sale right now.
That's what I was thinking. I don't think that amount of damage is due to just being strung up. Looks like it was dropped. Perhaps the top was sanded too thin in that area when it was refinished...
Jaimo - No need to apologies. Actually, I want to thank you for buying it so no I won't be able to make an irrational decision! Congradts...I think you will be very pleased. It is truly a...
No but I'm sure it's just as good as the '22 that has apparently sold. In my experience Gruhn is usually accurate when they say "exceptional tone and volume" or similar.
I'm curious...I thought...
Good! I was about to whip out the plastic:whistling:
I think he had that one at Swannanoa last year. It was indeed a tank!
I also have a friend who has a six course Sobell. He calls it a cittern. I believe it is a shorter scale..24" maybe 25"? I will see him in a few weeks and discuss.
Yes the octave mandola term...
That's what I'm saying too. Obviously I'm a huge Manson fan. ;)
It's not a refinish, just a super clean closet sleeper. This is probably what they looked like new.
