    Re: Carbon Fiber Experiment

One thing I forgot to mention. Due to the structure of the CF, the tops and backs that were made are not braced. I think this will work ok with the mandolins because they have a relatively small...

    Re: Carbon Fiber Experiment

Thank you. Part of teaching is figuring out what will get the kids interested. We are NOT skilled luthiers, just people trying to figure things out. I have received a great deal of help from...

    Re: "Granadillo" fingerboard (NMC)

Oboes and clarinets are made of grenadilla wood, or that is what it was called in repair school and most of the repair manuals on band instrument repair I own. It wasn't until recently that I learned...

    Re: Update_mandolin_Mass_Production

    Thanks Bill,
Don't know about taking on the world, but at least they know how to do quite a few more things than when they started. We will hopefully get more finished next week. I wish we had more...

    Update_mandolin_Mass_Production

    Hello All,

We got side tracked with other class projects but we are starting to get the electronics and other parts setup on our class project. We took time out to do robot programming, power and...

Re: Durometer for checking wood hardness

Cool! I'm guessing some of the other plastics testing procedures might not be so successful like burn tests : ) I had my HS students use the Rockwell hardness tester to collect data on some of the...

Re: Major drill press upgrade in minutes!

I've purchased 3 axa piston type from them over the years and 1 bxa wedge type. They have all worked great. One problem I have found with all of the Far East tool holders (we have phase II at school...

Re: Major drill press upgrade in minutes!

I looked at the picture and saw the norris sticker and wondered what the heck is he talking about. He has an over sized vise on a drill press with what looks to be a common inexpensive keyed jacobs...

Re: basic power tools for mandolin building

I would have to put table saw and drill press near the top of the list because both of these tools will enable you to build jigs and fixtures more accurately and quicker. These can then be used with...

Re: Should we hide our work in progress?

Same problem with BIR. People wanting to talk in length about stuff that just slows you down and is not billable. Maybe a time limit and a sign that says 2 questions and 10 minutes are free, after...

Re: Should we hide our work in progress?

Should you hide your work? interesting question. I am a novice mandolin maker but a very veteran band instrument repairer. I have always found the mechanics of how any instruments work fascinating....

    Re: Winding pickups.

    Thanks Jmp,

I have been splicing the wires , I was wanting to know if there is a technique for doing it that is commonly used by the Pro's. OR, do they just start over each time. The wire I am...

    Winding pickups.

When winding pickups what do pickup makers/repairers do when the wire breaks or the spool runs out before the appropriate number of windings is accomplished? We are winding about 8000 wraps on a 4...
  17. Re: Pickup Winding...More Mass production project

I don't know. It is an inexpensive 12 volt DC motor. Takes about 10 minutes of concentrated effort to wind a pickup with about 8000 wraps of 42 gauge magnet wire.

More pictures...these are 6 of the 26 mandolin pickups that need to be made. The bobin materials are from stew-mac.

Re: Someday I'd like to build a mandolin

I won't pretend that we build the quality of instruments that some of the people here build, but my students build very playable instruments and they have ZERO background in woodworking. It helps...
  20. Pickup Winding...More Mass production project

Pickup winding is going surprisingly well this year. I have a student teacher observing me and my classes so I asked him to do some video of the kids. Here is a student winding a pickup. The parts...
