I've done the same thing and yes, you shift if up a string. As far as I play it, there are no notes lower than the A on the G string.

Original is on the Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott "Real Time" album. Dixie Chicks also used the song "Long Time Gone" off that album
I am also starting to think it is the tuning he is in that really brings out this instrument. Either he uses weird fingerings or he is not tuned in fifths. Here is another video of similar playing,...
Thanks! Yea, I tried doing a little research but the beat up nature of the guitar made it tough to know for sure.
Do most of these Gibson's have a similar sound? It seems a lot of tenor...
Haha, yea for some reason I couldn't read that quite right. Almost thought it was "Ste...". Know what model of "Gib" it might be?
First of all awesome song and this guy has some other youtube stuff featuring the tenor. I really like the sound of his guitar, anyone know the make?
Sorry if this has been posted already but here it is anyway
Isn't part of Sam's style due to a wrist injury? I seem to remember seeing this somewhere.

Here is a thread where some ideas for The Band's version are posted.
For the little intro I play a 3 sets of triplets walking down like so
A: 7-7-7---0-0-0---0-0-0
E: 5-5-5---2-2-2---0-0-0
then walk down on the A string into the chords with quarter notes

Just found this the other day and hadn't seen it here yet. This guy is apparently a well known Canadian folk artist and his newest project uses the Upper York Mandolin Orchestra as a backing band...
Just found this guy and figured some might appreciate it. Somehow I have never heard of him but apparently he is a fairly well known Canadian clawhammer folkie. His new album has got lots of mando...
Not sure if these have been posted elsewhere. This is a pretty old thread, but here are some videos of the mandobird in use I stumbled upon.

Not sure if you have figured this out already, but I stumbled on this thread while searching for info on the band while digitizing the LP and there are a couple songs not on the list above.

Mark O'Connor's son, Forrest O'Connor, has some awesome youtube videos I've been listening to. Great example of mandolin/mandola used for singer songwriter stuff.
Hey, I don't post often but just wanted to let you know I enjoy the videos and keep em coming, don't feel like your hoggin' the forum. I am always looking for mandolin in more of a...
I've been listening to these guys a lot lately. Almost Tom Waits meets the Pogues but its a stylistically varied album. Just thought some might enjoy and hadn't seen them mentioned here.
Do you guys have the basic melody tabbed out, or just go by ear? Is it in D?
Great tune, glad to see it mentioned!
Hopefully the Catskill/Hudson Valley/Ulster County region does the same. I know I've always thought of him as one of "us". Heck lets just make it a national holiday.
I totally agree, he is all about feel, a true musician. Just listen to "The Girl I Left Behind" or "Got Me A Woman" from Dirt Farmer, just hitting a groove that only he could hit on that mando,...
Not looking good...

I'm not sure how to ask this but on those tremoloed double stops, is she basically using a harmonized scale and walking up and down it? So on the A and E strings playing in say G is she sliding up...
Took the thoughts right out of my head!
Is the mandolin easily heard in the mix on those Kaleidoscope albums?
If I remember correctly David Lindley is also credited on mandolin and bouzoki on...
Perhaps...
John Skehan with Railroad Earth
Michael Kang from String Cheese Incident
Barry Mitterhoff with Jorma Kaukonen particularly the Jefferson Airplane covers
Drew Emmitt from...
Good to hear! I've been wanting to see them live and have always loved the Blue Country Heart CD (I know it's Sam Bush) and some of the youtube videos are great.
That being said, can anyone...
