Re: Things that pop up when I'm jamming

I remember being at a festival and walking past all the jams and I'd play along with one then the next and then the next... as I kept walking. So, I played for about 15 seconds in a lot of jams,...

Re: Small mando necks causing hand problems?

Yes. I had to quit playing mando due to left hand issues. After 2 operations on my left hand and arm I can now play guitar with the action set real low but had to sell the mando.

Re: Is there much point to an electric jazz mandolin?

First off, Danny, great playing and great tone.

I think there is as much point to electric jazz mandolin as there is any other instrument. The instrument is just a conduit used to express the...
  7. Re: Children in Bluegrass - How young should they start learning?

I think you have the right idea about them being "out in the open". You'll likely find that your kids interest will come and go over time but as long as the tools are available they're more likely to...

    Re: Too much Tremolo??

old style / new style or a mix of the two

Whatever you like. There is no right or wrong but tastes change.

Just listen to vocal tremelo in music from the 20s or 30s and compare it to more...

Re: Jazz Improvisation in a nutshell

Improv - re-aranging something you already know.
  11. Re: Children in Bluegrass - How young should they start learning?

Banjo has a much longer scale length than a 5 or 6 year old might be able to play. I think I read that you are in Michigan. Take them to Elderly if that is correct.
  12. Re: Children in Bluegrass - How young should they start learning?

I'm a fan of having a playable uke around the house for kids. They can play it if and when they want and if it gets banged up it's no big deal to me.

    Re: Big Mon (the tune)

Check out the first time through on Peaks of Telluride by Sam Bush. Fiddle but you can hear the melody. You can also check out a bunch of tabs on Mandozine.com.

    Re: Big Mon (the tune)

I don't have a problem finding the melody in the A or B part. The only thing with the B part is the first measure uses double stops rather than single notes.

I'll look for a simple version for you...

    Re: Practice/Multi-Instrumentalist?

When I played multi-instruments I'd make better progress when I concentrated on one at a time. For instance I'd only practice mando for a couple of months (or until I hit a learning platue) than...

Re: Playing with burn scars on my left hand

I think Django prooved that the music is in the person and not in the hands. I have no doubt you can work around any limitation. I've seen many mando players play 2 or 3 note chords and when you...

Re: Whatever happened to "affordable" Gibsons?

You mentioned other's who are building stripped down models. Check them out. I used to own one of them and it was a great instrument. There are also single person operations that are building great...

Re: What happens if no-one pays for music?

No, not that I can remember. Playing dance music was the most feasable way to work.

Re: What happens if no-one pays for music?

I played plenty of rock, county and top 40 because you could earn a living playing dance music. I never could understand how you can make a living (home, cars, retirement) playing "folk in the light...

Re: What happens if no-one pays for music?

I always throw money into an open case or tip the intertainment in clubs but I won't play in public for a handful of change. I'd rather stay home and play what I like, but that's just me.

Re: What happens if no-one pays for music?

You're not disagreeing with me that busking is, in large, not a money making endever are you? My comment pertained to making income as a player. I can see how you can disagree about the degradation...
