    Re: Best Blue grass Guitar

I strongly concur with looking at Bourgeois, Collings, Huss & Dalton, and Santa Cruz. They all make outstanding bluegrass (D-18 and D-28 based) guitars. Also, the entire Authentic line from...
  2. Re: Saw Dailey And Vincent For The Second Time Last Night...

Man, tough crowd. Different strokes, I guess. But I'm a pretty hokey, boring, and predictable person. I really am. And I probably should add unsophisticated. So, there ya' go.

  3. Saw Dailey And Vincent For The Second Time Last Night...

...Jeeminy creeminy, the voices and the playing!! These guys are the complete, total, package. Jeff Parker is an incredible mandolin player, B. J. Cherryholmes is an incredible fiddle player, and the...

Re: Mandolin and guitar at the same time?

Was a guitar player for 5+ decades before taking on teaching myself mandolin. My mandolin playing has come along very well and being a pretty good bluegrass guitar flatpicker has really helped. But,...

Re: "Old School" or "Extreme" bluegrass

If this is the future of BG...fine with me. And I'm pretty much a traditionalist. It's all good. You guys will bring a lot of young people into the genre. What's not to like about that? Nice stuff...
  6. Re: When were you guys first introduced to bluegrass?

Early '60s for me but I didn't get really serious about playing it until about 3 years ago. I've always really liked it and "dabbled" in it in the '70s and '80s. But the bluegrass fairy didn't bong...

Re: How Come they don't have mandolin jokes?

Last person I knew that made a mandolin joke on this forum ended up swinging on the end of a rope. We take our mandolining massively seriousfully these parts. :disbelief:

  9. Re: Blue Highway Tomorrow Night In Des Moines...Yippeeeee!!!!

Just back...the day after the Blue Highway concert. Just not enough superlatives so I won't even try. Truly nice and very humble bunch of guys too. That is all.

You, sir, know whereof you speak (that's a compliment).

  11. Re: Blue Highway Tomorrow Night In Des Moines...Yippeeeee!!!!

Being loud has little to do with the band members, at least in an acoustic band. The sound engineers are pretty much in control of over all volume...the band to a much lesser extent.

  14. Blue Highway Tomorrow Night In Des Moines...Yippeeeee!!!!

Can't wait. Gonna' get to meet and talk to the band beforehand. Anyone know what mandolin Shawn Lane has been playing? Is Tim Stafford still playing his carbon fiber guitar?

Re: strap: over shoulder or behind neck?

Tried it both ways. I like it over my neck best.

  16. Re: Mandolins considered the best of the best...

Jim, I was wondering how long it would take someone to notice my signature. To address your response...I'm a long time guitar player but have only been playing bluegrass for about 3 years. As soon as...
  17. Re: Mandolins considered the best of the best...

I guess I was thinking mandolins used primarily in bluegrass music. Sorry, I should have stated that. I edited my first post above to reflect that.

  18. Mandolins considered the best of the best...

What would you include as the cream of the cream of new, non-vintage mandolins? I prefer mandolins traditionally considered bluegrass instruments. I'm trying to educate myself regarding top shelf...
  19. Re: Making the jump from bluegrass mandolin to bluegrass fiddle.

And I always thought that guitar and steel guitar were the most difficult instruments to master...man, was I wrong?!!

  23. Re: The Del McCoury Band just...tore...it...up...on Marty Stuart'

Absolutely, Bernie. Marty and Ronnie just killed it on Rawhide. What a show! I tuned in just in time to see the last two songs. Wish I'd recorded (DVR) the show. I'll set it for next time. I'm sure...
  24. Re: Making the jump from bluegrass mandolin to bluegrass fiddle.

Yeah, I thought being familiar with the fretboard on mandolin, I'd have half the battle won. (Long buzzer noise) Wrong!!! I have about 5% of the battle won. Actually I can play a respectable...
  25. Making the jump from bluegrass mandolin to bluegrass fiddle.

Anyone out there tried to make the jump? Now that I have some serious woodsheddin' on mandolin behind me I'm attempting to use my knowledge of mandolin to learn bluegrass fiddle. Lord have mercy, I...
