Some people don't want to fly the airplane they just want to ride in it.
Personally I think a James tailpiece and a set of Waverly tuners will improve that mandolin about $550.00 worth. Beyond that setup, strings, and different picks will probably give you more bang for...
This actually looks like a decent build, I'd love to own it but not at that price. It does look played in
That FON is associated with a 1933 A50. The specs are as follows:
Oval sound hole, bound top and back, single-bound fingerboard, fingerboard raised off the top, dot inlay, silkscreen Gibson...
These were rough copies of a Kay body style and brought in under dozens of brand names. It's the same model you hear at the end of the Rod Stewart song Maggie May.
At one time they wrote the serial number under the label in pencil. Is there a Factory Order Number stamped on the neck block?
The headstock was indeed modified, probably to hide a scar of some sort. I don't see this as a deal.
When you're just starting out the pick isn't holding you back. The Golden Gates are really inexpensive mandolin picks. I'd suggest you start there.
A Wurlitzer ad for anyone interested.
I'll have a ham sandwich.
Maryland's snakes:
You have one species of rattlesnake that is native to the state. Non-native snakes can be killed. Good luck on making the distinction.
The color is closer to the US made models but the finish looks more like the poly on the imported models. Those tuners started showing up on imported mandolins in the 70's. I suppose they could have...
Has Diogenes found you yet? :)
Does anyone know what the line is on this mandolin selling?
It appears from what I'm seeing that the mandolins built in the US might be more of a red burst than the Japanese models. We need more examples of the Japanes models.
Hey, it's been tuned.
Yeah, that's kind of what I was saying, kind of.
linomuoio, can you post a picture of the back of your mandolin headstock? Everything about your mandolin except the color and the tuners looks like a USA made mandolin. Were the tuners replaced? Are...
S-69 dates it to the Second Half of 1969.
And there is the harmony logo on the pickguard.
This comes up every now and again.
Or the Loar era Gibsons.
Years ago I had one of the imported models that I think had a plat on the back instead of the three screws. By the way, I have a set of those tuners new in the box. I also have a Harmony A carcass...
OK, there apparently was a point where the US made Harmony Batwing had an adjustable truss rod. Here is an H8025 that has the Grover high ratio tuners (or low ratio depending on how you look at it)...
Cliff Sargent.
