    String recommendations

I would like for players to recommend string brands and gauges for two 1938 Eupophone instruments: a mandolin and a mandola. I hardly play mandolin so do not have a particular style of playing in...

    Scott,

I would like to change my member name from hambonepicker to BrucePHammond. Thank you for your consideration and response. Will this require a password change, as well?

Re: An open letter to Classifieds users

    Scott,

While I have not succeeded in selling any instruments in my five previous attempts, I agree entirely with the idea of supporting this site with a small percentage of any instrument sale....
  4. Giuseppe Scanga, ca. 1900 builder/repair in New Jersey

Does anyone have any data on a builder/repairer in New Jersey named Giuseppe Scanga?
His address was 336 Palisade Avenue. It may have been in Jersey City but I cannot read the label.
  5. Re: Who was the first American mandolin manufacturer?

    Errata

As for my statements on Estudiantina Espanol de Figaro, aka The Spanish Students. Previously, I stated the Spanish Students performed in NYC on New Year's Day, 1880.

    Paul Ruppa has...
  6. Re: Antique Handel or Stromberg-Voisonet tuner buttons

Anyone on the cafe forums know a Jim Dulfer? According to Matt Umanov, he is a tuner button expert. Where else should I post this question? Or does looking for someone violate TOS of mandolin cafe? I...
  7. Re: Who was the first American mandolin manufacturer?

There have been statements that Bohmann received multiple patents under variant spellings of his name: Bowman, and maybe another variant. The problem with searching these early patents is they are...

Please post photos when you get it finished.
  10. Re: Who was the first American mandolin manufacturer?

Please see my May 16-2019 post on this thread. It includes a scan of Bohmann's catalog front page, which states, "Established 1876." I am uncertain, but think the statement claiming Bohmann began...

Please send photos when you find them. Thank you.
  12. Re: Who was the first American mandolin manufacturer?

Please see my post of May 16. Definitive proof that Bohmann made a mandolin in either 1882 or 1883 - depends on how you interpret the letter. I can email you a scan of the original handwritten letter...
  13. Re: Antique Handel or Stromberg-Voisonet tuner buttons

Would love to see some photos. But I imagine they were in the same style as the round buttons, white celluloid with a symmetrical floral inlay, MOP and some other material - right?
  14. Re: Antique Handel or Stromberg-Voisonet tuner buttons

These are the original tuner buttons, and are fake tortoise shell. Celluloid. apparently, ivoroid tuners are much more long-lived. I recall someone used to reproduce the fancy Handel tuner buttons...
  15. Re: Who was the first American mandolin manufacturer?

Sure would love to see a brace of photos after it gets restored.
  16. Re: Who was the first American mandolin manufacturer?

This is interesting, simply because I posted a photo related to this thread some years ago, and I have researched Bohmann since around 2005. I will post the photo with a small addition, later.

  17. Antique Handel or Stromberg-Voisonet tuner buttons

Has anyone seen stock Handel tuner buttons that look like these? I am trying to discover what they looked like originally. Additionally, I want to fabricate some reproductions.

    These tuner buttons...

    Re: Are you a licker?

There seem to be options for finding the interview.

The NPR archive only was blocked - or the web archive?

A google search should get you there, and if it the website you find has it deleted,...

    Handel tuners, semi-fancy

Tuner buttons shown are from an American 9 string, harp guitar, ca. 1885-1888. They seem to be a cheaper grade of Handel tuners than the nicer ones you see with MOP inlays, and such.

    These look...

For many years, the C9 belonging to NASA at Ellington Field in Houston has been in plain view.

People in these parts call it the "vomit comet."
