Darryl, your knowledge of detail never ceases to amaze me. I am reminded of the time you told me the year of my D18 from a picture you saw of me holding it. I am very familiar with 72210, and play it...
I don't know Ken...I have an A2z that I am pretty certain is maple. There are several A2zs listed on the Archive as having maple backs. Some of the later ones, with pics. Have a look and see what you...
The FON of 81250 is listed as unknown, but it is 11985 as one might expect. Just wanted to make it official. I took the first seven or eight pics shown of 82369. The first and second were intended to...
This might explain the F7. A big stock pile of F4 mahogany necks and F5 type bodies laying around, then a weird marriage.
One thought on the finish question- You see a fair number of the mid 20s Ferns with lacquer spayed on the labels. This may have been due to the policy Gibson had of letting someone try an instrument...
There is a very tangible difference between Loars and early Ferns, from a playing perspective. The unsigned Loars are Loars. When you say Loar, it's means a lot more than just the signature.
Congrats Phil. That is a real beauty.
I recently acquired the most wonderful blackface early 1925 snakehead, that is so clean and farm fresh, and is generous to my ears beyond beyond my ability to verbally express. There is a problem...
Thanks for sharing that "Ron" story goldtopper. That is a very typical one. Last year after we had finshed our last set and CD sales at the Gettysburg festival, Ron had a couple reasons he needed to...
I have always thought the "missing" chop was on purpose, and sounded great. A case in point that what you leave out is as important as what you put in. I really like the analogy of letting the music...
I have to agree that Bobby's Fern is amazing, one of the best mandolins I have ever played. I have played two other Ferns that sounded about the same, one being Earl Taylor's. The other one I owned...
I have the "Crusher" prototype F5, and it has never let me down or made me wish I had brought something else instead.
there are some good Jade pics here

Mandotool, here is a link to an article written by George Gruhn that you may find of interest.

Tom, I just think people assumed the Loar sold,...
pardon my ignorance, but where is this mandolin being auctioned?
here is an excerpt from notes I have on the provenance of signed Loar 73013 dated April 25, 1923-
*The mandolin was taken to the music store and sold by one Arnold Keppel in 1984. It had belonged...
Lowell Levinger at Players Vintage Instruments http://www.vintageinstruments.com/ used to offer refubishing vintage cases.
Well done Tracy. I like it. Congrats on getting a new mandolin too.
I heard danny playing his Loar at Gettysburg last year, and it is an incredible mandolin. Of course, in his hands it reaches it's full potential. He connects with it.
When was Bob Applebaum ever their mandolin player? It almost sounds like someone has the bands mixed up in their minds? I can't picture this scenario.
I owned an F10 in the late 80s, the one pictured in the Gruhn/Carter book. I am thinking this is the same mandolin. It actually is a pretty good sonding mandolin. The string tension just feels a bit...
Are there any jams or live Bluegrass Music going on in town today or tonight? I will be in town only today and tonight. I will check my email and here.
