I'm still in search of *the* pick and would definitely welcome an opportunity to test drive one of these. Thanks you both for giving an chance to do it for free.

That tuning makes for some cool chord voicings.
Yeah, I know about the rails and purpose-made pickups for mandolins. I just wanted to float the idea and see what everybody thought. When I get around to it, I think I'll get one of those Moongazer...
Alright, I know this is a topic that tends to be hotly debated whenever it's brought up around guitar nuts, but the reason I bring it up is different than the usual discussion.
Here goes... Some...
Thanks, very much. I'd like to try to keep it closer to the mandola scale, so I'll probably need gauges at least as heavy as your archtop setup.
to djweiss: You wouldn't happen to know off the top of your head what gauge that F string is, would you?
to mandolirius: mandroid's talking about moving the chord shapes up, or down, a string....
About how feasible would a 5-string be with mandola scale length and a low F (F C G D A)?
How about the "Boone's Farmers"? In honor of Daniel Boone's history in the Cumberland Gap area (and in honor of cheap booze).
Johnny wasn't exactly known for playing an electric, either. I don't think I've even seen a picture of him with one.
I don't have an electric mandolin (yet); but, when it came to guitar, I had fun with with everything from the thickest fuzz to tone so thin it sounded like it was coming out of a transistor radio....
Not a problem. Wish I could've been more help, but I'm pretty new to the community, too.
Here's a pretty good video of a cover of the Lumineers' song.

The video has a nice inset shot of the chording hand for the shapes that they're...
I read a couple things and it seems it was a some sort of complication related to an operation he'd just had. It doesn't make it less sad, but it does explain how he went at such a (relatively) young...
Nah, money's too tight for me to be able to do it guilt-free... There's always weird stuff popping up on ebay and such, Ill get my ugly duckling some day.
Thank you, Mr. Richter. I've been a fan since finding your youtube videos (before I even found the Cafe). Anyhow, great demo. While I'm at it, I'll add that you're one of the few people that can pull...
Man, that thing looks weird enough to wish I had the money to blow on buying and getting checked out and set up.
I guess it wasn't meant to be, though.
I've got that mandolin, too. The only complaint I have (which I'll try to remedy next time have the strings off) is that the D strings snag a little bit in the nut, so it takes a bit longer to get...
Yeah, I'm having trouble imagining a solid body electric tenor banjo that wouldn't sound like an electric tenor guitar.
I'm kinda curious about trying to build one of those electric mandolin kits, but I've noticed that most people switch out a good amount of the parts.
So, that got me wondering if there was...
Fairly new to the mandolin, also, but I've played guitar for a while. Generally, unless you're performing or recording, I'd say play until you break a string or two... or until you just want new...
Ok, I gotta say that looks pretty classy. How do they sound?
Thanks, everyone. I guess I'll have to grab a pack and see if they work for me.
As for the Jazzmando ones that Larry mentioned, about how big are they? I tried the Jazz III's and just couldn't get...
Does anybody have any experience with D'Andrea picks? Maybe even the D'Andrea Pro Plec large round...
this is a fun thread... i'm happy everyone had a good holiday (and congratulations to clockwork john).
i was surprised to find one of those new gretsch new yorkers under (actually hidden behind)...
I have that mandolin (probably... it's a Rogue and it was cheap). I always wanted to try the mandolin out and happened to have 50 spare bucks, so I picked it up to learn. I already played a bit of...
