Late to the string, as usual...
I've been selling natural rubber grommets, "Steve's Silencers" for over ten years now.
I've never had a return...but mine are natural rubber, which I'm sure...
I suggest recording in WAV at the highest bit rate available on the recorder and then downsampling and reformatting with Audacity.
With Audacity you can also correct problems with levels, EQ, and...
My personal experience after placing grommets on many instruments during the last seven years is quite different than Tim's.
I have found that grommets actually INCREASE the volume of a mandolin...
For the record, Steve's Silencers ARE real natural rubber.
As I've stated numerous times, no baby naugas are harmed during the production of Steve's Silencers;
Wow.
I make Steve's SIlencers and I use Doug's armrests and I never thought of that.
My hat's off to you.:)
I would go to Ed Dick at Olde Towne Pickin Parlour in Arvada. He has a lot of experience working on older Gibson oval holes.
The guy in Cheyenne, Wyoming, retired from doing repairs. He used to be...
Sorry, wristbands are not as good as armrests, especially Doug's McClungs. Wristbands do suck up arm sweat better, however. :)
Doug's armrests put your arm in a much better position to play with...
And HOPE than mando you fall in love with is one that you can somehow afford to buy...;)
But Jethro had a a large company MAKE him a custom mandolin.
Most of us have to settle for tweaking and pimping out off-the-shelf models.
And Big Joe's contribution pretty much said it...
They use this "sillyness" because it works.
Don't believe me? Ask Tim O'Brien or Mike Marshall.
Or try it yourself with a mando that does ring between the tailpiece and bridge.
Sure, you can...
Capos make great "third hands' for changing strings.
It's the only time I use one...:)
I think that we should send Bill our old mando cases for his cats so they can each have their own case.
In the Denver area we are blessed with several GREAT teachers.
Charlie is certainly one of them. Jordan Ramsey teaches in Lyons, and Greg Schocket teaches out of Boulder. They are all super...
I promised myself I wouldn't post about BC picks again, but...
Most posters talk about the sound and tone of the BC picks and make their judgments based on that...for me the best thing about BC...
I did the same thing about a month ago.
Same solution - superglue -problem solved...
No one.
Huttos are unique, just as Loars are unique.
But, there are quite a few builders currently making "strong" mandolins.
All you need it the time to play 'em and the money to buy 'em.~:>
Grommets work to damp sympathetic vibrations that happen between the tailpiece and the back of the bridge.
They do the same thing for the spaces between the tuners and the nut.
Some mandolins...
I replaced the stock PG on my Fern with the smaller abbreviated floating guard that was originally used on the Wayne Benson Model.
I also had it set slightly below the plane of the fretboard.
...
Yes, Bowfinger, it originally ran in Vintage Guitar Magazine.
The problem with the "two identical mandolins but with different finishes" approach to an A/B test is that such animals simply do not...
I beg to differ.
Here's what I wrote about my varnished Fern:
How Much Does the Finish Matter?
When acoustic instrument aficionados get together it usually doesn’t take long before they come...
GREAT pictures!
Will it sell? I have no idea....
Actually Sam broke his wrist in a car door. That accounts for his locked wrist technique. He can't bend his wrist if he wanted do.
FYI Sam's wrist technique before the break was quite fluid.

Why not both?
That's what I do on especially hot days so my arm doesn't stick to my armrest.
I use old socks cut to perfection......
Interesting that two of the most famous Gibsons, behind Big Mon's of course, are so heavily modified that they are barely Gibsons any more
Hoss - Randy Wood
Mike Marshall's Loar - John...
I played a Carlson-signed Montana Fern for several years.
I've had a 2002 Fern (varnished in 2005) since it was five days old.
The Darrington-era Fern has a more resonant and even chop (the...
