    Re: Ball-end strings?

    @ Dave Hanson:

I got some Redwings and I've just put a set on the Tobin mandolin. I have to say I'm impressed.

I'll try them out at a session in the next few days, but really I'm confident...

    Re: Newbie set up

Received mine the other day. Lots of useful stuff in there. The home-made nut file idea could save a lot of money!

    Thanks Rob!

    Re: Ball-end strings?

Dave, buying them as singles is just too expensive. I'm after strings as a set so that they would be available from a UK retailer. That's the only way the cost will be sensible.

    Otherwise I'll...

    Re: Ball-end strings?

    Thanks for the reply, mandroid.

I can get loop end strings to work with the tailpiece on the mando by holding a ball in place until the string gets some tension. I'm after a way to avoid that...

    Ball-end strings?

Does anyone know of any strings with the same or very similar spec to the D'Addario J73 set, but with ball ends? (J73 are .010 .014 .024 .038)

    Thanks.

Re: Adjustable bridge for flat top mandolin?

    Thanks for the input, guys.
I should have said that I'm in the UK. I'm sure CA could make what I need, but I'd have to pay taxes and duty to get it here, so the price would become a bit crazy. I...

Adjustable bridge for flat top mandolin?

Does anyone know of any adjustable bridges that are available for flat top mandolins?

(I mean ones with normal non-fixed bridges seperate from the tailpiece, not guitar-type pin bridges.)

    If I...
  10. Re: Mandolin CD: O Life go Laoi by Fiontan O Meachair

I've had this one for a while. It's the best Irish mandolin CD I've heard in ages, maybe ever. Thanks for trying to bring it to a wider audience, Dick, it deserves to be heard more.

    Whistler, I am...

Re: How old is this Gibson A2?

    Aaarrgh!

Just had a look inside and the transverse brace behind the soundhole is loose on the bass side.

    Is this life-threatening and/or expensive?

Re: How old is this Gibson A2?

Thanks for your input, everyone, that's very helpful.

Darryl, the top finish is indeed in quite rough condition. The previous owner considered having it refinished, but fortunately never did so. I...

How old is this Gibson A2?

Could anyone help me with finding a date for this Gibson A2, please?

The serial number is a bit hard to read; it's probably 55832, but could be 57832 or even 54832 - I've put up a reasonable pic...
