If you take out the "chunky" , you'll lose the finish. No way around it. Straight edge razor blade , sharp broken glass, or any good scraper will remove the stain , and the wood if needed. light...
I bought some really nice mahogany on BBay, never got around to using it though..
I agree with Steven ........ " the interesting ones who have the most fascinating futures ".
I guess you could use about any type of stable wood if weight is not an issue. I have used Popular before and it has worked fine.
Basswood is probably the preferred choice , easy to work with,...

there is no way I can win a pick, just not possible
Looks really nice John ! Glad you could use the wood. I have enough to make more mandolins than I can possibly build in this life time. As for the wood, after getting it, I compared it to a...

Really hard to tell from the pic. Based on location there is a possibility that it is Locust. I have used it several times, sorta looks like it. Not Honey Locust though, it is quite...

I agree with John, Rick, and especially Dick.

I've seen Cathys work on guitars, no doubt she could do the same on your mando. Jerry
Billhay is right...
What?
Larry is a close friend of mine, we've shared mandolin info for a long time. He builds quality instruments, mandolin and guitar. If I didn't build my own, I'd have one of his.
That's how...
after using the saf-t-planer for awhile, I've found that it can be a very usefull tool. Level your press plate, level your wood as close to possible on the bottom side, make passes less than 1/8...
I like the "only breath in" , I put the mask on as tight as I can, then, using the cheap reading glasses, slide them way down near the tip of my nose.
I agree with Lefty on the grinder disc, especially on the maple. Some things I prefer doing the "old" way, with hand tools, not on the maple. Jerry
Nice, really nice, now you're hooked. when are you starting #2 ? Jerry
Thanks Buddy for posting the locust pic, I can build um, but can't post a picture. Jerry
