I have Collings MT glosstop that is a lefty.
I got it in a trade deal and thought I would flip it.
I quickly switched it to a righty to see what it sounded like.
It sounds great.
Better than a...
Murrfk,,, where do you live?
I am in BC and I have lots of experience buying mandolins mostly in the US.
There are some hoops to jump through but not too bad.
Don Roon,,, why are you looking to do this?
Do you have a particular mandolin on hand that you want to switch over or are you thinking that since most mandolins are righty that it seems to be the...
Jim I don’t still own the mandolin that I started this thread about.
I can’t really remember but I think I probably traded it away for something else.
After that I did buy several others iterations...
As the original poster of this thread over 15 years ago all I can say is "Mr Garber, , oh sure throw that in my face!!!" Haha!
I can't remember last week never mind 15 years ago but I think I was...
I have found that sometimes the nut or the bridge slots are “pinching” the string so it can’t get full vibration.
I would take a good look at the slot widths.
Orpheum and Stradolins were built by the same people.
I have had lots of both.
They vary in quality from full laminated to laminated back and sides with a solid spruce top to some very rare ones...
I am not sure what Benko was usually using for tuners.
Might be that he used whatever he could get his hands on?
He might not have been stuck on any one brand.
I am not sure of the age but the Centenial tailpiece ensures that it was 1967 or newer.
Canada's Centenial was in 1967.
Here are some pictures of my Benko Model B6 serial # 26-38
I might have the pickguard hiding around here somewhere.181626181627181628181629181630i
Lightly flamed back, mop block inlays 1967...
Well the mystery continues.
These tuners that appeared to be the originals are not right.
The base plates perfectly match old imprints on the back of the headstock but it wouldn't be possible to...
I didn't even look at them till now but they are not F style tuners at all.
I just looked at the peg head and for sure the old imprint confirms that these were indeed mounted.
Must have been tight.
Let's try this
I am having trouble with uploading pictures because I have a new computer and haven't figured it out yet181587

It is hard to explain the colouration and finish on this mandolin.
Definately hand stained. It has a mottled appearance that is hard to explain or take a picture of.
The final finish is definately...
Wow! That is a beauty.
Looks pristine and that is a great colour.
I will try to get some decent pictures as soon as I get a chance.
I have a Benko A style with F holes.
I think it was a Centenial model or something like that.
I can't really remember right now but I think he built an F hole and an oval hole of this model.
I...
It takes an oddity to know an oddity and I love oddities too Will.
Yes he did have 2nd thoughts and pulled the ad because he came to realize that the mandolin was something special.
I can't remember how I got his contact info but several months later I contacted...
