If you ever want to tarnish silver real fast, Put it in a bag with a cool hard boiled egg. Keep an eye on it,8-12 hrs will get it pretty tarnished.

2 Grand would be a good deal
I bought scratchy when it became available for the first time from the owners. The story was, The grandfather had aquired the mandolin through a trade. He had an auto repair shop and traded his work...
Can we keep politics out of the mando discussion?
You could recut it all and do a double layer .020" black binding first then your.090" second. The black will blend right in with a dark burst. It makes it a lot easier to scrape the stain off later...
Darryl, Do you think they stamped the FON through the F hole after the F-5 was completed or before the back went on?
That would fit with what I said. So could there be as little as one F-5 With it's own FON?
Were the FONs assigned to each individual part or the instrument as a whole?
It seems to me that Gibson had overproduced both mandolins and the parts to build them in comparison to demand. I believe like Tom, there was a suppose to be another batch of Fern Loars. The...
Those are the cream ones. There are some more pics of it on my website as well.
Here is an A I just made with the Relic tuners from Stew-mac
Helps balance the mandolin when it hangs on the strap.
Harder to loose the cover.
Won't dent as easy as a stamped tailpiece.
Gibson can't sue you for using it.
I'm sure there is more.
Over time, wood looses it ability to absorb and disapate moisture. If you were to accelerate that processs and seal the inside of the mandolin as well as the outside, You would greatly help to...
I prefer to let my wood go through the humidy and tempature changes naturally. If the wood is not stable enough to handle that, I prefer to find out right away. Most people are not going to keep...
I carved up 3 carp. tops and I let them set for a few months as i usualy do. 2 of them cracked. The cracks were not there right after I carved them. Go figure. I guess thats why I like to have...
Monroe picked below the extension . I have one of Ricky's more recent cds and he has real bad pick click. A real simple trick is to hold the pick so very little is sticking out, less than the...
Anyone know where Bills second Loar is?
I know there is at lest one out there. What is wierd is, As far as I know the second Loar is missing. I started a different thread for Bill's second Loar in the vintage section.
Isn't a Hampster a Gerbil with it's tail cut off ? Don't matter, they all taste the same.
A good mandolin will be opening up for years!! As far as warming up each time you play it, There are many Loars that take a while to warm up and other high end mandos as well.
Killer sounding.
Speaking of quilted, Check this out. ...
Kinda looks like

I use the leather dye myself. After the pearwood is applied I dye it one more time then apply some shellac to seal in the color so it doesn't keep turning the white wood black from handling it.
