The A's become difficult to tune.
That's my approach too. I think it's really easy to make a kid hate playing an instrument.
I guess it is since this is not the first time this thread has come up. I'm with you Alex. I just close my eyes and listen to the music.
I had a conversation about similar issues with my daughter...
It didn't help me much. I can't make a good tone with the bow, find my notes, or even bend my left arm around to get my pinky into play. I'll try the bass fiddle next.
KGNU (our local NPR station) in Northern Colorado plays "Old Grass" on Saturdays. It's a bluegrass show that more than a few friends of mine have been involved with.

Why embarrassed? As a frequent audience member, I've seen the capo goof on more than a few occasions. I thinks it's good for a laugh and really don't give it another thought. Stuff happens. That's...
I enlarged my endpin hole in several steps:
1. took off the cast tailpiece and reamed a larger hole.
2. put it back on the mandolin and drilled the wood just shy of the total depth so that it...
My KM 380s is a backup of my backup. It's a dang nice instrument even for the money. I've spent alot of time on the setup so it plays pretty nice. Right now, it's sitting in my office at work. Gets a...
I went Eastman 615 to a '96 Montana Flatiron A-5 Artist. It was a good move. Getting good feedback from some of my jam mates. My Eastman just is not loud enough.
JeffD beat me to it but I agree. Listening to music you want to play and musicians you want to play like.
You baiting me Barry?
What you meant to say Geoff is that you know cool people that built an enjoyable mandolin at RockyGrass.
The slots for mando building at RGA are probably full but they open up from time to...
We just came together at the right time. Here is my journey (so far):
1. Decades of folk guitar, no real progress but fun. Got a bit bored with it though.
2. Had an opportunity to start building...
The A vs F thing is pretty common in these discussions. I got my cheap F and now I'm over it. Got a much nicer A now. Sounds good, plays good and holds it's own in any bluegrass jam. Never looking...
I married a red head so.....yes!
why thank you.
When did you start playing up the neck? :)):disbelief:
I had banjo frets put on my Eastman 615 and I believe it improved the tone and playability. My Montana Flatiron came with thicker frets too. I like em. I have a theory that a stronger, more solid...
Picked all day. Fingers are still sore
I spent an entire day at a Mike Compton workshop facilitated by our own Rick Albertson. It was fantastic. Mike really has alot to offer whether you are a Bill Monroe fan or not.
Be sure to say hi to Eric. He's one of our Lyon CO gang who hosts one of the biggest BG jams in the state. Super nice guy and a great bassist.
 yup!! Looking forward to Steel Pennies and Long Road Home!!!
Do you remember the builder?
I was hoping the Infamous Stringdusters would beat Marty just cause I like Cobb's mando playing so much. I'll second you on the Chocolate Drops. They are amazing. Pretty cool that Ms. Spalding beat...
