I thought that was a great mandola on the occasions that I had to play it.
I recall finding the neck shape of some Webers to be too large around for my taste, but some people love them. I don't know if all Webers have the same neck shape, and if they have changed over time.
Mike Marshall has a video and a book that explains 3 fingered chords in a very clear and useful way. That is what really helped me to understand chords and their relationship across the fretboard. I...
I just saw this and downloaded them. Thank you very much, that was very kind of you!
I have played mandolins with 1” and 1 1/16” nut width. A narrower nut width can make a big difference and can be very helpful, but a good setup is very important, especially in the sense of string...
I have played the mandolin a few times. I think it is a fantastic instrument with real depth and range of sound.
It is meant as a Loar type sound, which I believe Hans Brentrup does an excellent...
I have found the the materials from improviseforreal.com very helpful.
I have no financial interest, except that I have given him some of my money and found it to be well spent. :)
Having a mandolin with a 1" nut width, I can say that it makes it much easier to play out of chord position up the neck.
I have heard from people that had first hand knowledge that it was 1", but of course I don't have first hand knowledge myself.
Very nice, congratulations!
big muddy makes a nice mandola in that price range
phoenix mandolins, especially the Neoclassical model, are made to work well with light strings
I tried both of those instruments, the Collings and the Northfield at the Podium, of the two, I would have chosen the Northfield.
interesting! It would be interesting to hear heavy and light built Loars compared.
Hans Brentrup always talks about the Loar's being built heavy, and I know he built that way.
I don't know anything about it personally, not being a builder, and never having played a Loar. But I do...
Speaking of his guitars, I should mention that he also has a book on building guitars. It also looks amazing, just like his mandolin book.
Also - in terms of building, he is trying to finish up a...
Hans and Maureen are both wonderful people, I feel very fortunate to have them as friends.
Unfortunately due to health concerns, Hans is no longer able to build, I guess that is why he is...
I was at Hans Brentrup's house the other day, and he showed me his last F5C mandolin and a new book he has written on mandolin building. Looks like very practical information with lots of...
do find any tonal differences between the body shapes of your mandolins?
jazz, klezmer, classical, fiddle tunes, bluegrass, choro
I'm game!
wow, lucky you! Enjoy the journey!
It's funny, I just tried the EXPs and I hated them, took them off and went back to the J74s. To each their own.
I just got a very nice short scale mandola from Mike Dulak at Big Muddy
yeah, but that's the sad part - I'm not even a luthier. At least then I would have some cool instruments to show for my insanity :)
