    Re: Loar Restoration

Does Mark cringe every time "Trigger" comes through the door, with a little bigger hole in the top?

Re: Gone To Far With That Scroll Theme

That looks like an Ibanez model from around the mid or late seventies, kind of a "many models" Gibson tribute. A friend of mine had one, and one night they had played a club in a small town, and...

Another lesson perhaps missed--first put soap or beeswax on the screw threads.

    Re: CDs, files, Spotify?

Then there is the perspective from the artist; I read some comments a few days ago on facebook from a well-known regional performer, who had received his $39 dollars and some odd cents payment from...
  6. Re: Anyone have notation of Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms in key o

If this is for mandolin and in tab, just move it over one string; i.e. move fourth string tab indications to 3rd string, and so on. You won't even need to rewrite it; just rethink it.
  7. Re: Anyone have notation of Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms in key o

Do you have it in another key now? If so, what key is it in? Is it in tab or notation, or both? There are a couple of real easy ways to transpose either one if you have no luck finding a version...

Re: Old age is creeping in

A friend of mine, who has played rock and roll for nearly 50 years, and is an internist to support his music habit, has chosen to go with Cabela's Archer's Ear, described as being suitable for "baby...

    Re: Fake Gibson?

It is a cheap knockoff; there have been some comments here on these, and if I recall correctly, they are plywood and not worth much. The case might be worth more than the mandolin.

Re: John Duffey - controversial stage persona?

I don't know that the word "controversial" would be an appropriate description. It has been said that he did not suffer fools lightly, but I recall only quick witted retorts to audience members,...

Re: Unarchived Loar at skinner auction?

Those little details that have been pointed out that are out of the norm makes one wonder whether this mandolin needs a closer examination to determine whether it really is the real deal or not. ...

    Re: Cracked Neck

What kind of mandolin is it? Does it have a truss rod? If it is a low budget instrument, you might be ahead to take it back. The crack is indicative of a neck joint problem, and if it doesn't have...

Can you blow up the picture to see if there are any identifying scratches, distinctive tailpiece engraving, or anything that might make it identifiable? Does anyone recall whether he might have...
  15. Re: A recent observation from another sound searcher.

String spacing and neck width can greatly affect tone, as described by Rodney in the last post. Perhaps his comment was in jest, but the likelihood of ham-handed folks being able to sound better on...

Re: Lost a Tuner Key Screw for my Gibson F-9

Are you anywhere near the tri-cities, and have plans to attend the festival there? If so, and Mike doesn't have the screw you need, and you don't make any progress with Gibson, feel free to PM me.

My worst mandolin dream was the night a school bus ran off the road and through my yard fence, and ran over my Loar, which I had leaned against the fence while waiting for a ride from a band member. ...

Re: Lost a Tuner Key Screw for my Gibson F-9

If you can find one with the correct thread size, which should be possible at any well-stocked hardware store, or perhaps an auto parts store, it's possible to modify the head to match the others. ...

    Re: I can dream, can't i?

You might check to see if the gal who had the mandolin is single, and how desperate she is for male companionship, if the plan to win a lottery doesn't work out.
  20. Re: How feasible is it to drill a hole in a zither pin?

It shouldn't be hard if the drill press has a vise to hold the pin solidly; I would grind a small flat spot where you plan to drill so the bit will start easily and not try to slip off sideways. I...

You were posting at the same time as I was, so we now have a far more likely scenario as to the cause of the damage. You may need to come up with some sort of waterboard to find out what actually...
