    Re: top deflection

I think some builders squeeze the plates but I'm not sure they do that to measure any amount of deflection.

For consistent builds you'll need to build a deflection jig. After several builds you...

  3. Re: What Do You Think About This Unique 1 Pc. Back?

    Eh...

I just can't stay quiet long enough because after reading some comments, I detect a hint of "cringeness" from a few builders.. while they try to be open minded, and humble. We don't know...
  4. Re: What Do You Think About This Unique 1 Pc. Back?

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

You also need to consider stiffness per mass. If the stiffness is really low, you'll have a heavy back.

Re: How do you rip the wood for your ribs?

Slice and dice on the bandsaw, then the strips go through my DeWalt portable planer. I can get them down to about .090".

I then use a long block of walnut with sandpaper glued to one side and...

Re: Adding mass back to a neck?

Yes, if you want more mass, rout out where the truss rod is and add in a solid steel rod.

If you're just wanting to make the neck thicker or deeper, I think you may want to start over with a new...

Re: Neck strength and size HELP?

The downside is there’s no reason to use it on fingerboard. It works well for the carbon fiber, but that’s all I’d use it for.

White glue is fine on fingerboard.

Re: Neck strength and size HELP?

Rout out the ironwood and replace it with carbon fiber rod. I use a 1/2" tall x 1/4" wide the full length of the neck into the headstock.

    It wont move.

    Re: Virzi tone producer

Dr. Cohen found a "noticeable" lowering of one particular frequency due to the Virzi. Other modes affected as well. Cohen admits that his listening conclusion were based in his own hearing, so...

    Re: Virzi tone producer

If we avoid the whole "virzi" shape and just see it as a mass of extra wood centered to the top plate, then it's a bit less complex and less magical.

So adding mass has a lowering effect to all...

    Re: Virzi tone producer

Yes, adding mass to the top will do the same thing as a virzi. It's a bit difficult to do once a Mando is finished and strung up however. And even more difficult to compare by removing a virzi...

    Re: Virzi tone producer

They lower the resonant frequency of the air chamber by adding mass to the top. If that makes a particular mando sound better with a lower resonant frequency, then the mando will sound better.

I'll just post my notes I've saved to my computer over the years. Probably the only measurements that would be valuable to you is near the bottom, Macrostie's measurements he did on my Gibson A5L...
  15. Re: Why are good mandolins more expensive than good guitars?

    It’s generally supply and demand.

Everyone has a guitar, everyone plays guitar. It’s a popular instrument, easy to play, many sizes for many ages. So there’s a lot of demand for it. This demand...

I wouldn't worry about the illusion that the bridge is sinking into the top. If you are worried, look for other pics of mandos at the same angle and notice that the string reflections always seem to...

    Secret.

Have the shipper mark GIFT on the box. UPS treats it like gold and won’t hold them.

My brother has been at UPS for 30 years, been a driver for 20.

Thanks! I had to check that tab, and it appears for some reason there are rests that are missing in the tab. And that seems to be something the tab builder did at that time, left out rests and just...

Obscure Tony Rice tabs. No mando content.

I'm posting this here because many of us play guitar in addition to mando. And the fact that Tony's work reaches beyond just guitar, influencing other musicians no matter what instrument they play. ...
