I met Steve about 8 years ago as he's local to me here in Oregon and I needed some work done on a couple of my mandolins. Steve has worked on four of my mandos so far, and his prices are extremely...
Agreed! Lot's of forums have "stickies" that appear/remain at the top of each form page, and this thread would make a great "stickie."

Very nice John! We all know the old saying that "necessity is the mother of invention," and while that may be true I think that frugality is the father of invention....! :))

Beautiful work! I especially like that 2 point....gorgeous back!!!

I don't yet own a Holst mandolin, but I can tell you that I've met and worked with Steve a couple of times and you couldn't ask for a nicer, more humble guy! I've seen him building both guitars and...
Yes, John (GASP!) actually amplifies his Loyd Loar.....look out your window, see any pigs flying?

I would think that an "official" letter from the builder stating that no CITES listed materials were used in the construction of the instrument would more than appease most border inspectors and...
FWIW last time I saw John Reischman and the Jaybirds play live John was using a pickup on his Loar--and it was a very small venue with no more than 50 people or so....

Look at the pic a little more closely Ed......:)
How many points a mandolin has really has much more to do with aesthetics than with tone--tone comes from the materials, the sound holes, the bracing/tone bars, and the builder.

I would just add to that if you do pay with Paypal, ALWAYS make the payment with a credit card and NOT directly from your bank account! If something happens (i.e. seller ships you an empty box) and...
I'm sure there are builders who would be willing to make the view through the soundhole just as pretty as you'd like to pay them to make it!
Personally, I've always wondered how they keep that...
One of the biggest smiles of my life was seeing the expression on the B of A branch manager's face when I showed up with the Sheriff to collect on a judgement I had against B of A for screwing up the...
The only problem with that is that you have very little recourse if the seller doesn't ship the item after you pay. If you pay with a USPS money order and they don't send the item, not only is it...
When selling, I only accept USPS money orders because A) you can check the numbers on the MO with the USPS to make sure that it's not stolen or a forgery, and B) you can't stop payment on a USPS...

I modify one point to match the same rounded profile as a Dawg/GoldenGate pic. Just lay a Dawg pic on top of a Wegen TF140 (also works great with 1.4mm Clayton triangle pics) and trace the...
I'm with Ed in that I'm somewhat skeptical/unsure about the "waking up" and "opening up" statements---seems like these are well-used descriptors that have worked their way into the mandolin lexicon...
I'm curious about the cloud tailpiece, I didn't think they were still using those in the 20's?

I bought both a McClung and a Bell armrest to try them out. Both really great guys and a pleasure to do business with. On the mandolin I had at the time, I really preferred the Bell--so much so that...

It's that time of year when car interior temps really get cranking, was wondering if anyone had any photos of heat-damaged mandolins to help me remember how important it is to keep my mandos from...
Sure is gorgeous! I love the natural (i.e. non-sunburst) finish and the tortoise binding. I'm continually amazed by the tone, looks, and fit and finish of Weber mandolins.

No, the auction was ended because "the item is no longer available" which means either A) the seller struck a backroom deal with a buyer, or B) they decided to pull it and try and sell it later. But...
