Re: High Strung 12 string guitar - nice!

Very nice. Nicely played and your mini 12 sounds sweet. I want one of those.

Thanks for that tune. I'm a big fan of Norman and Nancy. I also liked the tone of your octave. Keep on.

Re: Jumping from OM to Cittern?

I was also intrigued by the Gerald Trimble record. I couldn't afford to buy a cittern, so I built one. 24 inch scale. Flat top. Probably not as good as a carved top but I don't have the expertise....

    Re: Bouzouki pickup

I would argue that microphones are the best choice for amplification. Notice that all vocalists use mics. Pickups allow for movement. Mics require staying put.

Re: Nordwall 10-string cittern - just ordered one!

Wow. It seems impossible to mix nylon strings with steel. I'm impressed with the result.

    Re: I'm REALLY excited!

I once sought the details of the instruments that Wish makes. I think he has a place in the marketplace. I do think he builds a rather crude instrument. That being said, you can make music on them....

Re: 5-course, tell me about yours?

Nylon for the lower bass strings? Are they classical guitar strings? How do you attach them to a tailpiece? (I'm interested)

Re: 5-course, tell me about yours?

I hesitate to post, because I can't recommend a builder. My cittern is home made. It's 24 inch scale. I started with the Doc Rossi book. Tuned it GDADG. Too similar to the zouk IMHO. I've tried a few...

    Re: Cittern Sighting

I just loved the mixture of Irish and African. Both use the rhythm and melodies and drones. That sort of mixture is what made American music. We mixed the European and the African and created the...

    Re: Not strictly CBOM

Y'know the banjo is a type of lute. Five strings are similar to five courses. Southern parts of Africa did not have the timber necessary to make a lute, so they used a gourd and a skin head. The zouk...

    Re: DGBE tuning

Good thread. I have been experimenting with similar tunings on my cittern. With a G on the bottom and DGBE on the top four it does have the chord forms similar to guitar. I have also tried banjo...

Re: Who's your favourite CBOM player???

Gerald Trimble introduced me to the cittern with First Flight. Joseph Sobol has developed a finger style approach to the cittern that I like. Sarah Jarosz does nice work on octave and accompanies her...

    Re: OM Question

I recommend that anyone who wants to play any instrument should buy what they can and start to play. At some point, you will either settle for the one you bought or you will upgrade and get a better...

Re: 5-course, tell me about yours?

To be exact, I have two five course instruments, but one of them is a banjo. My cittern is my own build. 24 inch scale. Flat spruce top, mahogany back, sides and neck. I started out using the Doc...

Re: Puerto Rican cuatro: the $89 cittern

OK, it looks cool. Inexpensive. But why is it a quatro? That would suggest a four course. This thing should be a cinco.

Re: Joe Foley cittern & string choices

It's difficult when changing tunings that are so different. The issue is how you play. Are you playing tunes or accompanying another instrument that is playing the tune? When you set it up with a low...

    Re: fav pickup for 'zouk?

JJB is a good source of piezo setups. I think they are equivalent to K&K and perhaps a bit less expensive.

Re: Zero Glide nut from Stew Mac

FWIW, the "Stew Mac" product is actually a Gold Tone product, made in Korea. I bought one for my zouk. I have made a couple instruments with zero frets. A lot easier to do than a trad nut. I can't...

Re: Comparing 3 CBOMS of different scale lengths

I'm impressed with the fan frets. Figuring out the angles as well as cutting the slots. Did you have access to CAD/CAM or something like it? Or did you cut by hand?

    Re: Newtonestrings strings for cittern

I may buy six sets from JustStrings. Their shipping fee is fairly high, so it makes sense to make a bulk order. The more I play them, the more I am getting hooked on the tone. Using D'Addario Irish...

FYI, I did not purchase six sets. No minimum was required by Just Strings. I might buy a few next order if only to save on shipping. Good strings.

    Re: Newtonestrings strings for cittern

A round vs a hex core? Hmm.. I keep playing it. I think the wound third course is the difference I hear.
