  1. Re: Hand pain with mando, none with guitar. Any ideas?

I find your statement about a different wrist position for chop chords sticks out to me as there should not be much movement from relaxed and straight.

    Is there a competent mandolin-specific...

    Re: Blocks and no progress

Sometimes we are not the best gauge of our abilities, oddly enough. Playing with others is good as often they will see the gold where you see all the mistakes. I cannot tell you the number of times...
  3. Re: Artistworks school to augment in person lessons

I might mention it to your instructor and inquire how to add to what he is doing. If Mike says do it one way and your instructor another ... it could raise issues.

I would also be sure to give...

    Re: pickups and tapping

If you are talking the click of the pick, I don't notice a lot through the monitors or PA via my K+K. Tapping or brushing the top with my pinky I hear quite a lot better than on the neck.
  5. Re: Taking some heavy metal and progressive metal songs from gui

I saw the band Head for the Hills play Run to the Hills. They tore it up though the mandolin player played electric on that tune.

I don't put many limits on the mandolin family. Jim Richter's...

Re: Hanging mandolins on the wall

We each havevour own relation ship with music. The key thing is finding what works for you now. We each argue for what works for us, because it does.

What works later, for me, is often informed by...

Re: Hanging mandolins on the wall

Jeff, that 'uncasing' ritual is now my quiet meditative moment reserved for when I play out. It doesn't matter what stage I play, that moment is the same as when I play my laid back weekly Tuesday...

Re: Hanging mandolins on the wall

    Exactly, Bertram.

Most days I am at home with my preschooler. We sing together, I sing the toothbrushing song, I get ten minutes of practice in while she is coloring/reading. Without easy...

Re: SM57 or SM58 or Beta SM57 or Beta SM58

Charlie makes a good point. I played the best solo of my life through a Beta58 last Tuesday. The crowd was not critiquing the mic sound, they were hearing the results of the last month of mando...

Re: Hanging mandolins on the wall

With a 5 year old in the house, the only safe place for cases is the closet. The only unused closet is in the basement. (Instruments are hung in room with the HDTV, quite safe).

    I play instruments...
  11. Re: Arpeggios - tips and tricks to play these well and how to use

Mike Marshall has a arpeggio-centered Homespun course that was useful to me at the stage I was at when it came out.

I am very interested in what August and Don will be putting out, though what my...

    Re: Breedlove KO Strap Options

I cannot comment on how the KO balances with the button, but I put a button on side of the neck as recommended and like how my OF hangs now (with tonegard and without).

    Re: Breedlove KO Strap Options

If you have to put a post in, check their excellent instructions on their website. They have bolts in the neck/body joint and you do not want to hit them.

Took a local luthier all of 5 minutes.

    Opus 57 - second solo?

My mandolin instructor just gave me Opus 57 to work on, with the first solo worked out as sheet music. Why did I overlook this tune before?

I see that TablEdit and my Masters of Mandolin book have...

Re: Should I get a Mandolin Stand?

I love my Hercules wall hanger for home use.

At a gig, I only sometimes use a stand as only some stage environments have a safe enough spot where it cannot be bumped/etc.

  21. Re: Using an amp is new to me - could use some help with my setti

Re: Need Help Choosing a Mandolin Upgrade.

I would make sure that a used Collings isn't in your price range, but if not then I would go with Weber. IMO, both make fine mandolins that should feel like a nice step up.
