Hanna,
Get a mandolin and any good beginner book and you'll be playing some simple songs in a day. Your music background will help and, if you choose, it will certainly help you read standard...
I played Clarinet in Elementry School and Middle School. Then nothing for about 30+ years before taking up mandolin.
I was there last December and had no problem with entering or exiting with my mandolin.
Has anyone tried one of these yet? I have a lefty F style in progress and will be needing a case.
Jay,
Why not take a trip to Mandolin Brothers and play a broad spectrum of instruments. You could train down and back and play everything from a Big Mudy to a Gibson DMM.
It's also possible that there is a cafe member close to you that could help you get started.
Interesting request. As a lefty I never had an issue with right handed instructional material. Perhaps I just imaging the mirroe!
Fellow lefty here. My problem with the bigger builders is that they want to charge a premium for building a lefty. I got a $1 discount from Bill Bussman!
We need to do this for someone so I'm looking for an interesting break.
lets see if this one is bigger
and back
OK tried to get cute and failed
351 lefty
Here is mine
Doing original breaks is a challenge for me. Alyone have a break for this?
I believe there was a version in an old mandolin magazine. If you still need a copy let me know and I will go digging
I use a wegan twin for tremolo and it really makes it easy.
Gibson A-9 on ebay in your price range. Will not have a glossy finish and should be great for bluegrass.
Sadee,
Did you ask the builders if they had a customer is your neck of the woods? Just a thought but you might be able to play one or more of your short list. They might also have one to send to you...
Played clarinet in Jr Hi. Took up the mando at 52 so I don't think there was much music theory left in the old brain.
There is a Jade F5 on ebay for under $700 with 9 hours to ge. I really think this is going to be a deal for someone.
Ditto the heavier pick. Also, it seems that each mandolin responds differently to different picks. PAS (pick aquisition syndrom) is one of the more affordable things that happen to mandolin players....
A Hester F5 this spring.
