I've done two Fs with ebony and one with Ivoroid. Hate to say it but I prefer the ivoroid look.
Go for it, you have a solid top and it may make a difference. Cautionary words:
1. Poly is super hard and is difficult to gloss up. Doesn't re-melt like nitro when buffed so you need to work through...
If it's playing well and was almost in tune after sitting, that speaks volumes. Super clean too, even the pickguard mount looks good. Congrats!

I regularly deal with Northfield, and they are good people looking to put the best product out there. The mandolins are consistent, and well thought out. Initially, I thought $2500 was too much for a...
+1 on Robson. Copal is a good varnish to use b/c it dries hard and therefore can polish up nicely. Magister was my favorite but the creator passed away last year and the family is battling over the...
thanks for those links, I've been wanting to try some wire work as well.
Varnish is worth the money if the luthier really knows how to apply it. I am referring to oil varnish, not spirit varnish (french polish). Oil varnish needs a drying agent to harden in a short period...

James those tuners are beautiful. Can you pm me and let me know how much something comparable would be? thanks,

Niko polish is an excellent option, though it's a bit costly. It's used on the finest violins, and is safer for fragile finishes. Even works nicely for cleaning frets & fingerboards.
I have some old banjo bridges but I'm not sure they would take the tension. No shame in a new bridge if you're just looking to pick on it imo. Enjoy!
CA turns green on maple, when under lacquer.
same stuff, 1.2 density. makes a great fingerboard too.
Blackwood is an option too, I've found that it bends easier than eboney and has great chatoyance.
Wow, that's a beast. Does it have babbitt bearings? I gave up a nice Crescent for space/weight reasons and will always regret it.
I'm with pfox14, Lyon & Healy are of excellent quality & short money (I scored a very nice 26 rib L&H in perfect condition for $200 on ebay). It's all about neck angle & neck bow with bowlbacks....
I have some sinker maple, it's beautful wood with a darker color than normal. Mandola-sized, I've been saving it b/c it cost too much. With maple the story goes that the densest logs sunk when...
Thanks James,
I know, so far so good with the Blackwood/Dalbergia family. Solvents get me pretty good though, even turps.
Thanks for the tip on Coremark, hadn't heard of them. Gilmer is a...
nice work, m'cellos are sweet
That's some good info from Marty and John. In my experience, a stiff top or excessive neck angle reduce chop. I built an F5 last year that had fantastic treble and sustain, but could have used more...
If it is a compression of the spruce, and not a deformation of the top, you can remedy the problem.
CAREFULLY moisten a paper towel and place it on the damaged spot. Then try steaming the dent with...
I love the hardware store fix! Props
I have some really epic material that is calling to me from the other side of the shop, looking for good reasons to make shavings.
Thanks for the thread!
