Re: Are there any different looking mandolins?

    Re: 2.5mm-3mm pick

I have found it is easier to play softer, or quieter, with a stiff pick than loud with a flexible pick. Having said that, 2.0 mm is my limit on mandolin and bass guitar. 1.5 on guitar. This may say...

Re: How long did it take?

We all must find our own path. Without pleasure, whether from practice, playing, or just sounds. Each has it's own reward.

I have been playing the bass exclusively for months now. Last week I...

    ^ That.

I will add that "good" can only be measured by your pleasure in playing.

Among the people I play with I am the best mandolin player because I am the only mandolin player, I am a 10.

Among mandolin players.... I mostly suck.

Neither of those ratings inhibits my...

I am 57 years old and I can still remember my musically close minded father yelling. "YOU CALL THAT MUSIC?"

A lot of you remind me of him.

Re: Chris Thile & Yo Yo Ma

I saw them last week at Ravinia. It's a great venue for that kind of music and they playing was exactly what you'd expect.

I like the TAD-1R 60 for the mandolin. I have a Martin guitar that absolutely LOVES the Jazz 40 LG.

Re: The next time you are asked to play for free....

In my youth I played for money. That usually meant waiting till 4 am for some surly club owner to give me 50.00

Today I would rather play for free and get home before midnight....or at least 2.

Re: dawg picks for smoother playing?

Blue Chip picks are VERY easy to reshape. As a matter of fact almost too easy. Anything coarser than 1000 grit sandpaper may remove material faster than you want.

I could be wrong but I believe Mike Marshall had the fret board replaced with a wider nut on his loar.
