Let me be the contrary voice. I have not been impressed with Northfields. Not bad, just not that good.
I have liked some Eastmans I have played, FWIW.
Whatever you do, play it before you buy it.

I have strung up my mandolin with A and E courses normal and the G and D courses an octave apart. I used a normal A and E string, each tuned down to G and D. That may be an extreme of what you are...
I don't push it away from my body I just hang it around my neck in such a way that it's hanging to the side of my body. I agree with you you should keep your left arm free to freely move--if anything...
I once thought it was essential to use a mandolin armrest, but I noticed over time I was not dependent upon it.
I realized that I no longer held the mandolin across my body, as I had gradually...
Last year, I played and liked Austin Clark's mandolins, but it was after enjoying his larger bodied instruments--guitars, octave mandos--that I realized just how good Austin was. I ordered a mando,...
I too was pleased and surprised that the Albrights were so nice. Good looking as well.
I could never remember the soundinEarth or sound earth or whatever it was.

I really like the Gibson Heavy black picks, which I think are the most underrated pick ever.
The Gibson has a certain tone that I like, and I haven't found a pick whose tone I like as well.
Of...
If you have a keeper, your search is over. My Weber is definitely in that realm.
Any of you guys have tab for Cat Scratch Fever?
Maybe we should sing so that we remember to need air. ;)
Hmm. Two fifths--high and low, and in between a third, and no root. Not a great sound. Hmm.
I have used it, and like it. While some tunes might have an awkward moment, I find the added color is interesting. Even bluegrass tunes don't seem to mind, most of the time. On a mando I am having...
While I do sometimes think that the phenomena is mostly in the perception of the player and is not a property of the instrument, I remember when I first played a very old Martin dreadnaught and in...
Jack Dwyer & Tim Connell, Twin Mandolins
These guys put on a very nice show on Friday night, in Seattle at the Empty Sea Studio.
Choro, Miles Davis, and more.
I think one of the guys was playing a...
I agree with you in two respects. One, that should say "inspired" by Bluegrass Stomp, two after about six notes it sounds like Andy begins to channel Miles Davis' "All Blues".
I feel safe saying that the quality of the build, and the materials used, will affect the sound of the mandolin more than the small differences in scale length.
OTOH, I have a mandolin with a...
This is bad advice. If an alternate grip works (tone, speed, etc.) then there is no sense changing it.
It is highly individualized.
If you have a different sound it is because you are holding the...
One way to approach this trip is to not worry about the woods at all and just play the mandolins and see which sound you like the best. After all the sound is primary and the wood is secondary, right?
That is my grip, too. I have found no downside to it, and in fact for me it is more functional than the regular grip. I cannot play the usual way any more.
I understand your plight, but what about the C part, the one that moves from the low strings up to the open A.
I cannot get that to sound right!
Custom mandolin: 14.5" scale, one-piece birds-eye back, some other little changes...
I usually make a screenshot of the exact window and print that.
That is it exactly.
The modern Fender teardrop shape heavy is good and bright.
I like a Martin teardrop in the slightly heavier gauge than the Fender Heavy.
Another issue not mentioned is overall...
I loved Levon, but I REALLY loved his drumming, and REALLY loved his drumming on Mystery Train.
