Thanks for all the replies. Brent, could you explain the proper fretting technique? I thought fretting strings, regardless of instrument, would be the same, on the tips of your fingers.

Which mandolin mfrs in the $500 or less group offer mandolins with wider necks, thus, which might be easier on my old hands?
Thanks.

Thanks, fatt-dad...appreciate the imput.
Mugbucket,
I haven't been to the Jahke Rd jam yet but are there any other jams in Richmond, say, on the north side?

I'll take the contact info for Dr Cohen.
Thanks.
Got it!!
Thanks everyone.
I read another post where someone said that they like that mandolins are tuned in fifths. Could someone explain what is meant by that? I'd like several opinions, if possible.
Thanks.
I agree with ya jim-n-va. For a festival of that size $110 doesn't seem appropriate.
Sorry, Lynn, but I'm not politically correct so here goes, "If you go parkin' lot pickin' in those shoes, you might give all mando players a bad reputation" (lol).
The only issue is whether or not...
I read someone elses post here on the cafe that made sense and might help...more often than not your obstacle(s) will be with you and not in the instrument.

Good imput, Jamie, especially since I thought I might have to buy an expensive mando while thinking that the cost of a set-up would be more than a cheap mando might cost.
I'm considering an...

I'd like to know the sound difference between an A-style oval (Army-Navy?)and the f-hole A-style? Which offers more sustain, etc.
Specifically, I'd be playing bluegrass & jazz.
Also, anyone have...

I've the same experience level as the person who started this post...so are you all saying that to play bluegrass you don't always need the 4-finger chord? Because if I don't, it sure would make my...
They come with a hard case but it's not exactly the best hard case you've ever seen. Serves the purpose though.

Graves Mtn is an awesome festival & they always have the top bands.

I bought the Shayne Bartley model about a month ago & am glad I did. They are fit, form & functionally a nice mando with terrific sound. I especially like the caramel color.

I was there on Saturday & as always, this was a great festival. I enjoy that you don't have to fight the heat or other weather elements like summer festivals since it's indoors. Plus I'm a newbie & I...
Ditto, the Moose is a good site for lessons.
Who is the sponsor of the workshop at Cabin Fever next weekend?
Robin,
Did you say a couple of months of sore fingers? Ugh!
