    Re: Gibson Snakehead Model ID

Do FONs cover whole batches of instruments?
The FON is pretty readable, although the last digit might not be 6.
The first 2 digits of the SN could be 73, but not 72.

    Gibson Snakehead Model ID

Lucked into this mando found at a yard sale for a low price. It has a badly cracked and poorly repaired top, but plays and sounds good(so far). I'm not sure of the model. I've been told it's a Jr,...

I see that there is a simultaneous thread on the same subject, so I'll end this one. Thanks.

Re: Advice on replacing a top

Thanks Adrian. I don't care about the top, so that method sounds viable.

    Advice on replacing a top

I built an A5 from the Stew Mac kit and after a year or so, I've come to the conclusion that it just doesn't sound very good and I don't really enjoy playing it. I think I carved the top too thin,...

Re: Comparing Breedlove F Hole Mandolins

Interesting thread. Thanks for the link. The ff I played was at Gryphon Stings and it was hard to put down. I do play bluegrass and I admit I'm a little resistant to the non traditional look, but it...

    Comparing Breedlove F Hole Mandolins

I had a chance to try a new Premier series FF recently and was very impressed with it.
The store only had the FF in stock not the KF or OF. The specs on the Breedlove site for these three models are...
  11. Re: F hole vs Oval hole thickness graduations.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like the Siminoff plan would be a good place to start. I see he offers a F4 kit which might be a good choice for me.
  12. F hole vs Oval hole thickness graduations.

I had a good experience building a Stewmac A-5 kit. The plan included with this kit depicts a f hole build with parallel tone bars or an oval hole build with X bracing, but suggests the same...

You can get bone at a pet store.
  14. Re: Internal pickup recommendation for Collings MF - KK, LR ??

+1 for the K&K twin. Sounds surprisingly natural. I tried the radius, but had to eq It a lot to get rid of the thump.

    Re: Pickup FAQ??

    I have tried:

Schertler Dyn-M and found it too mid-range-y
Baggs Radius and found it too thumpy.
K&K Twin Spot and found the output too low.
K&K Mandolin Twin and found it just right.

Re: Question on Twin Spot/ Twin Internal

I got a reply from K&K tech support:

So, Mandolin Twin (internal or fusion) produces more output than the Twin Spot. I'd say from this experience it's worth the price difference.

Re: Question on Twin Spot/ Twin Internal

Thanks for the reply. Two different mandos. Both pickups are installed internally. One is the "Mandolin Twin" model and the other is the "Twin Spot" model which is an older product. The elements are...

Question on Twin Spot/ Twin Internal

I just sent this question to the K&K tech email, but I'm so impatient that I'm posting it here in case anyone has had experience with both of these pickups:

I have a mandolin with a Twin Internal...

Re: Finished My Stew Mac Kit Build!

Thanks! On close inspection, it's a little rough around the edges, but nothing that really bothers me. #2 will be cleaner. Most important thing is, I'm loving the sound. It has a big open voice with...

Finished My Stew Mac Kit Build!

My first instrument build was a pretty steep learning curve. Mistakes were made. Mistakes were corrected(or covered up and lived with). Many lessons were learned. It took a really long time. No major...

    Re: Keeping your binding clean

    Hi Bart,

I'm assuming I want the shellac coats to go over the binding and not be scraped off, but maybe that's not necessary. I made the beginner's mistake off not sealing my stain and I got a lot...

    Re: Keeping your binding clean

Well, since I already had a few coats built up, I scraped the bindings clean and then hand brushed with a couple of coats of their own. Next time though. Thanks Jim.

    Re: Keeping your binding clean

Wish I had taken that course.

Well, I guess I stop my process. Wet sand. Scrap the bindings (again). Hit it with a coat of the spray shellac. Then start FP again.
    Sound right? Did he...
