Buy them both!
When I first started on OM I played around with chord inversions. (For example 4th string B on the G string when playing a G chord.). Over time I started playing chords further up the neck. They...
These might not be Bluegrass, but since you like Nickel Creek check out: Plaidgrass, David Grisman Quintet, Psychograss, Strength in Numbers, New Grass Revival, Sam Bush, Mark O'Connor, Mike...
I have a 1910 Gibson F2 (3 point) with an original end pin. I'm having trouble finding a strap that will secure fit the end pin. I don't want to replace the end pin. The strap also has to be thin...
I recently switched from a cool mist to a warm mist humidifier for my instrument room. I like the fact that the room feels warmer. At 40-45% humidity the room feels moister than with the cool...
I had a Martin backpacker guitar and it was built well. I didn't enjoy playing it because the neck was too thick for my tastes. I found one with a normal neck and was much happier. I don't remember...
I play chords up the neck with my OM. The reach is easier and I like the tone better.
My take on this is that when the US became independent all _ _ _ _ broke loose and instrument naming became out of control. If we had a King we would have official names and less confusing posts. ...
I'm now addicted. Lots of good answers above. I jposted awhile back while A/Bing 22" vs 20" scale OMs. I found the 20" to provide easier reach when playing melody.
After playing a few months...
I tried a few on my guitar. Some clicked and others made scratchy sounds, although listeners couldn't hear those noises from a distance. Some were nice. I play around with them once in awhile, but...
Roland White does a great job grouping them into positions in his book. Using the 2-4-5 D chord with the 2245 A, G chop chord and 423 C makes playing easier.
I went last year and had a great time! I highly recommend it. (I'd be going again this year if it wasn't for a family commitment.). This year's staff list is amazing!
Should easily fit under the seat on the bigger jets. I've fit mandolins in Caltons and Travelites under seats. I even fit a Voyage-air dread on one trip.
Where did you buy them?
Mine has been great
This 2010 post resulted in a dramatic improvement to my CD collection, so thanks to everyone that posted! I would appreciate knowing what 2012 CD's folks recommend. Thanks, Mark
I agree. I'd look closely at Webers and Breedloves. There are plenty available used on the Cafe. I would even suggest you consider selling one of the other mandolins to buy a nice model.
I...
I bought a used Fender 5 string so I could play quietly when my family is asleep. It plays well and was relatively inexpensive.
Weber makes fantastic instruments. These bridges are great.
My recommendation is that if you buy a used instrument you find the best luthier/set-up person in your area and get it there asap. ...
I have a F2 with maple back and sides. I think many of them have maple back and sides. In fact, my local luthier researched my mandolin and told me that it was originally supposed to be a F4. I...
This is fantastic! Thank you!
I used D'Addario Octave Mandolin Phosphor Bronze, J80 strings on both. I didn't put a new set on the 22" since I only had one set and the strings aren't that old.
I'll report back on stretch of...
I know some folks are going to want to correct me and sat 24" is regular scale. Please don't. Weber, call 22" regular scale, so I'm using that terminology for this post.
I've had the privilege...
Oval or f hole?
Check out Retrofret next time you go to Brooklyn. I recently spent a great day in Brooklyn visiting both Mandolin Brothers and Retrofret.
