    Re: woodworking clamps

I use some of all the above, but the ones I use the most are the smaller Bessy bar clamps.

    Re: oval hole bracing

I'm a big fan of oval holes. Of course they don't usually have the percussive rythm chop preferred by most traditional bluegrass pickers, but for a lot of other styles, the open chords sound sweeter....

    Re: Loar vs Kentucky

Either one of these will be head and shoulders above most of the competition in the same price range. I sell both, and like both. However, both of these (and most all new stringed instruments) will...

Re: c.1925 OS-made "Stella" Flatback Mando

That's a very clean one Jake. Every Oscar Schmidt made mandolin I've ever had sounded great. They look like they were built so fast and cheap, but they really knew how to make them sound good.

    Re: Austin Texas

I understand where Micks coming from. I know that my memories of Austin are colored by where I was in my life at the time, and wouldn't it be great if we all stayed in our prime together forever!

    Re: Austin Texas

I know that it's against the rules to talk religion :), but BBQ is a lot like church. It's all variations on the same theme, it's always prepared with the best of intentions, everybody feels a need...

    Re: Austin Texas

I didn't realize how much pork I eat, until the guys I worked with at Collings started asking what I'd had to eat the day before. It was always sausage, ham, pork chops, and such. Pork at least once...

    Re: Austin Texas

It's hard to think of a week in Austin that doesn't have at least one trip to Artz in it. Art is such a great guy, and music lover. My first week in Austin, several folks said I needed to go to Artz....

    Re: Paying for Set-up

I'm not at all insulted when someone askes me to set up a new instrument they bought somewhere else.
I have a lot of money tied up in old violins in my shop. Folks will often buy a fiddle from...

    Re: Most dreaded repair work?

I'm also voting for "anything that was already FIXED?"!

Hey Lynn, have you tried Fabreeze? I don't think any shop that ever does repairs should be without it. We had an old 1940's one owner D-18...
  13. Re: Vega mode 201 built supposedly around 1930 comments?

I've had a lot of flat top mandolins over the years, and still own quite a few. One of my best sounding ones, by far, looks just like that one. It's a great old time mandolin. It's got volume and...

    Re: Solid vs carved

I did not know that Frank Finocchio was making bent arched tops in this way. I'll have to check that out.

I started making some mandolin tops and backs like that several years ago, after looking...

    Re: Disappointing Loar/classifieds/other mandos

Even though The Loar is mentioned in the title of this thread, none of this discussion has a thing to do with the current mandolins made by them. To lump all chinese mandolins in with Morgan Monroe,...

Re: Sound holes in Ribs. Do they work?

I was wondering about all this a couple of years ago. I was skeptical about it. I thought that a hole big enough to make the sound louder to the player, would have to cut the bass response out front....

    Re: Home Recording Setups?

Mandosummers, what are your monitors. Maybe the problem with what you are hearing isn't what you are recording with, but how you are listening to it? Check your email.

Re: Slingerland Songster - built by Regal?

I used to think Slingerland had guitars and mandolins made for them by Regal, but the more af them I see in person, the more I'm sure they made most of them in house. There are a lot of things about...

    Re: Melody Maker Tenor Banjo

I'd like to see inside the pot as well. I'm leaning towards Stromberg Voisinet also. I've seen a few S-V's with that same head. I'm not cutting down your banjo at all by saying that it's made by the...

Re: Aging the tuners on "Frank"

I wouldn't worry too much if the plating was eaten off the post and bushings. You want them to look old and worn right? The part that looks the most "wrong" to me are the buttons. A lot of times when...
  23. Re: Have questions on modifying my Harmony mandolin

I've had quite a few old Harmony instruments with tight tuners. The tuners are really made pretty good, they just didn't spend a lot of time finishing them. I have had very good luck making them turn...
