  1. Re: Is an Eastman 315 enough of an upgrade over a well set-up Iba

    ...

Oops, sorry DC, from your screen name I assumed you resided in Our Nation's Capital...
  2. Re: Is an Eastman 315 enough of an upgrade over a well set-up Iba

If you haven't already, Appalachian Bluegrass in Catonsville, MD (about an hour from DC) would be well worth a visit; they carry the Eastman line and in my experience as a serial tire-kicker, they're...

    Re: Another Shopgoodwill Gibson A-3

Hmmm...it's the same mandolin as what's currently offered -- same serial number. Guess the sale fell through.

Re: broke back mandolin on Ebay

Could this be how Eastman deactivates instruments that aren't up to snuff? Akin to Gibson running over guitars with a bulldozer (but more gentle)?

Re: Rubner tuners on Eastman MD305?

The Rubners have a small flange around the very bottom of the posts; you'll need to counterbore the holes a tiny bit to allow the plate to fit flush. And I think you'll need to drill one new screw...

Re: Rubner tuners on Eastman MD305?

I'd surely try the first steps sblock recommends before investing in any new hardware. I don't think the StewMac Econo or Golden Gate tuners would be a step up; the stock Eastman tuners are virtually...

    Re: Shopgoodwill F5 Gibson???

I think you're right, journeybear. It's pretty risky for the buyer, as the descriptions vary in quality and the photos are invariably awful. Also, stringed instruments pretty often fetch silly...

    Re: Shopgoodwill F5 Gibson???

I'd love to see someone competent fix it up and play it, but I bet it'll be parted out. The hardware is worth a fair bit.

Re: Setting intonation on octave mandolin

That's right, tuning is the same with the heavier strings.

    Re: Eastman Truss Rod Question

Is this issue specific to recent examples, or older, or both?

    Re: Eastman 404...white top??

Listing says it ships from Japan; maybe this version is only made for the Japanese market.

    Re: Larkin Poe

She did pick up the mandolin briefly in one of their recent "live from home" shows, alas I can't find it now. I too wish she would play it more, she's extremely good!

    Thanks for the heads-up on...

Jim and Sue, thanks for your thoughts! Jim, there was nothing under the paper except more paper -- no damage to the back at all (except stains from the Scotch tape). As Alfons noted, the treble...

    Re: MidMo at Shopgoodwill

I'll confess -- I'm the lucky (?) winner who caught the bullet that Zach dodged. I'm a sucker for a sad case, and a big Mike Dulak fan, so I got in after Zach dropped out (I won't knowingly compete...

    Re: Guitar player learning mandolin

Kim, if you can find a luthier/repair person who knows mandolins, a good setup might help a lot. A stiff first fret suggests the nut slots might need to be tweaked, and chances are the overall action...
