i don't think there's a simple answer to your question....i think the recovery period varies w/each individual....i had triple bypass in december '14 and my biggest problem was 'wanting' to play...a...
my dad parachuted w/the 82nd into france on d-day too (probably w/your great uncle)...my dad survived - otherwise i would not exist to play my mandolins....

I have a golden retriever too and the (2) mandolins I leave out on a stand could probably use one of those tiny vacuum cleaners to get the hair out of the inside of the body....I know what you mean...

I admit I haven't read this entire thread but I read a couple of pages.....
my first mandolin was/is a fender....I now have much better instruments (4 mandolins total) and still play the fender...
yes...the 615 is a higher model (more expensive) than the 515.....basically it's the same mandolin w/binding on the back of the body and on the headstock....I have a 515 and think it's a fine...

I've used them for quite some time and yes they do 'round over' after a while....but it takes a while....I've have some success re shaping them w/emery boards/files....and I've also ruined some doing...
i have a fender and i like it....i have other 'better' mandolins too....i like them too....

i use 'em - i like 'em (i also have a blue chip and use the v-pick more)...i'd suggest you get a colored one though...if you drop the clear ones they are sometimes hard to find...
one other thing (i forgot to mention)...i miss the interaction on stage - can't hear each other unless it's going through the system and a lot of stuff we say on stage does not need to go through the...
