Re: Chris Thile & Michael Daves Duo

I'm right there with you. The production is simple but I don't hear anything lo-fi about it. I appreciate that it's recorded simply. It's simple music that doesn't need a lot of sprucing up to sound...

    Re: Tenor Guitar Conversion Candidate

Do it yourself. It's not that hard as long as you take your time.

    Re: Tenor Guitar Conversion Candidate

Sounds like a great project. I'm curious, though, why you wouldn't want to narrow the neck while you're at it? It seems to me that keeping so much space between the fretboard edge and the strings...

    Re: Mandolincafe Restoration Challenge

That's awesome. I was looking at photos to compare the tuners with those on my 1921 A2 and I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference, if I even could.

    Re: Frets on fiddles.....why not?

I think it's a mistake, too. What's wrong with the usual method of marking key positions with 1/4" paper tape? That gets the student close and their ear needs to be trained to do the rest. No matter...

    Re: Fretless "mandolin" revisted

I know it's nothing earth shatteringly new. I was pleased with the clean look and the availability of the material to precisely fit existing fret slots. I believe I used this brand in the .020"...

    Re: Fretless "mandolin" revisted

I converted a friend's p-bass (with his permission :D) into a fretless by pulling the frets and filling the slots with pieces of styrene sheet. You can get it in any color and thickness you want;...

Big Joe rang me up and told me it's all done! Just a few days and I can finally hear her voice!

Re: How many 'Celtic' players aren't?

That's just all the fried Scottish cuisine. :)

I can't say I fall into the "aren't" category. My Dad's family comes from Aberdeenshire (with a convincingly, though not 100%, provable lineage back...
  10. Re: "Catching" both strings in a course while picking

Nothing "allows" you to strike both strings. It's simply a matter of follow through like hitting a baseball. If you're only hitting one string of a course, you're either pulling up off of the string...

    Re: Washburn M118 SW

If it's like washburn guitars, the answer is "too much."
  12. Re: What's the best overdrive effect pedal for a solid emando?

It could very well be both! There are pedals that are easier to control with the knobs and pedals that are easier to control with the pick. It took me a while with my les paul to get the hang of it....

    Re: Basic amplifier

For a small amp with a lot of versatility that's not too pricey, I highly recommend an egnater rebel 20 head. I run it through a blackheart 1x10 cab for a small, versatile home amp with a lot of...
  16. Re: What's the best overdrive effect pedal for a solid emando?

    This is, in my opinion.

Re: The Life of Loar Deserves a Film

As much as she might love mandolins, even she wouldn't be foolish enough to fund that movie.

  19. Re: Playing mandolin through guitar effect pedals / using amp eff

For my taste, a big muff, a memory man, a tube screamer, and a wah pretty much take care of everything I ever want to do with a guitar. I suppose I may like effects for mandolin that I hate with...

Re: What now for Jack White?

Perhaps I was reading the situation poorly but I was commenting on the tone of the thread that seems to be the same tone one...
  21. Re: Fiddler in Band DINGED my BEST mandolin . .. !

I know musicians cherish their instrument, especially ones they like and paid a lot of hard earned money for. That said, if you play out you accept the fact that something can happen. This time it...

Re: What now for Jack White?

For a forum of musicians, the opinions here on music are pretty closed minded. Jack White bands (all three of them) are all pretty damn good, in my opinion. He does things differently and owns it.

    Legality of selling salvaged ivory?

I have an old piano's worth of ivory that I salvaged from (you guessed it!) an old piano that was going to the tip. Anyone know if it is legal for me to sell it as inlay material? I have no way to...
