Is There an Audio-Only YouTube-Like Public Hosting Website?
Could I ask for a recommended (free) respectable audio hosting public website? The audio equivalent of YouTube/Vimeo for videos or Picasa/Flickr for photos, without the stigma of all the file-sharing pirate copyright infringement mess? Sorry to be clueless. Intent is for a few original demos with public links. Most obvious solution is a personal website, but that is not an option for me right now. Maybe audio-only "videos" on YouTube, but wonder if there are other choices. Thanks!

I too use SoundCloud. The free version allows you to post 2 hours of audio and it is becoming a very popular site. Certainly worth giving it a go.
Re your comment about personal website, I have a link to SoundCloud via my own website http://www.luthier.john.co.uk and this allows me to have the tunes stored with them rather than taking up space on my own site, and it allows very quick access to the tunes.

I'll third the soundcloud recommendation. Been using them for a couple years.

Re: Is There an Audio-Only YouTube-Like Public Hosting Website?
Do you have to sign up with Facebook to join Soundcloud? It appears so . . . .
-
Re: Is There an Audio-Only YouTube-Like Public Hosting Website?
I certainly did not have to. I notice there's a Facebook option on offer but it is not necessary to be part of it. I am not at all involved in Facebook.

Re: Is There an Audio-Only YouTube-Like Public Hosting Website?
When you click on "Sign Up," you get a window that says "Sign up with Facebook." ???
-
Re: Is There an Audio-Only YouTube-Like Public Hosting Website?
The FaceBook logo was not there when I signed up. Looking at it, I would guess that if you just enter an e-mail address and choose a password then click on sign up that this would sign you up without having to be on Facebook too. Interesting to see how you get on if you pursue it.

I will fourth the soundcloud recommendation (as evidenced by the link in my signature).
Having used several music hosting sites over the last few years, soundcloud beats them all for ease of use and quality of playback. You shouldn't need a facebook account to open a soundcloud, but it will, along with so many sites these days, keep behaving as if you have one.
Another good option is Reverb Nation, but it's a little more high maintenance.

I got brave and ran the experiment. It seems I'm all set with Soundcloud, but Facebook never heard of me. So, thanks everyone!

Now all we need is your SoundCloud name and we can start listening to you. Good luck and happy posting!

I have feeling that Facebook owns soundcloud, or a good portion of it. When I listened to clips over there I got continually harassed to log into facebook.
So far I'm part of the Face Resistance.

I would be interested in hearing some others' pages/music, if you have an account.

Very nice playing, CC.
I am finding soundcloud very user friendly and intuitive to navigate. I'm already a bona-fide member of the "Lo Fi" Group. Which is where I belong!

Jaycat, good postings. Like your bluesy sound. CC, different from jc's and again, interesting arrangements and instruments.
re your request for our pages/accounts, I am at http://soundcloud.com/Mandosounds

Hey Jaycat - only listened to the one so far but really enjoyed it. I'm new to the site but already have found a few pieces that have done it for me. If anyone else from the Cafe has their tracks up there I for one would give them a listen.

John -- your link didn't work for me.

Re: Is There an Audio-Only YouTube-Like Public Hosting Website?
A heads-up here, from an audio geek standpoint:
The last I heard, Soundcloud encodes free accounts at 128k bps, which isn't very good. As a comparison, if you buy an MP3 from amazon.com you get an MP3 at 256 kbps data rate. The Apple iTunes store operates at a similar data rate. That's the price you pay for a free service -- lower audio quality. They could easily offer higher quality, but then you wouldn't have an incentive to pay for their higher tier service plan.
;)
If you're just looking for a free hosting site and you're not feeding it a high-end audio project, than it's a fine way to share your tunes. Anything more, and you might want a higher quality streaming or download service. Or a personal web site with a generous bandwidth allowance, where you can determine your own compression rates for streaming audio. If you need a free web site for now, then consider that a stepping point towards something better, not the final resting point for your demos.
One other point:
If you're writing original music, then I wouldn't advise uploading full-length clips of your creations. It's more difficult than it's ever been, to make any money or gain recognition for writing original music. But you're shooting yourself in the foot, if you just give away the full-length sound file (even at 128 kbps quality). They call it "streaming audio," but anyone with half a brain can figure out how to capture the audio for use as a soundtrack for a video or any other application.

I searched it from the site. It is:

Nice music John! "Mist on the Mountain" "Hugh Finlay's Melody" "Bonaparte" "Dundas Loch" are some of my favorites. You have a wealth of music there my man! Now I'm feeling the need to go listen to some Alasdair Roberts, Kris Drever, Mick Hanly, Dick Gaughan, etc.

Re: Is There an Audio-Only YouTube-Like Public Hosting Website?
I use soundclick.com for my stuff. I found it because Alan Alexander (who has written a number of good books on medieval and renaissance mandolin tunes) hosts his demos there. My tunes (mainly Medieval/Renaissance stuff on Mandolin/Octave Mandolin/Guitar) are here:

Re: Is There an Audio-Only YouTube-Like Public Hosting Website?
Sorry about that link not working, folks. Here is one I think works now: http://soundcloud.com/user9128887.
Chris, the link you have found and put in your mail above also brings up tunes by other Kellys - I noted the total as 75 but i have only around 50, but thanks for trying to get me recognised! ;)
JD, some super playing and arrangements on your soundclick site. I must look further at this area of music.
