Not likely, but you can find an excellent A style for less than a grand.
"reasonable F-style" is an oxymoron.
On rare occassion you can find an F style made in the US used for under a grand in the classifieds (I've missed two in the last few years). The makers were unknown to me and generally the ad said something like "Not the best fit and finish but great sound". Nobody ever sells a mandolin that sounds awful by the way. The low price leader used to be Glenn Mandolins. I don't know if they still are. Pick your price, determine what you'll settle for and watch the classifieds.
The Howard Morris F5 that was just listed in the Classifieds would answer that description ($1000).
I love my Glenn. It gets better and better every single day. In fact, I am amazed at how great it sounds. It was great when I got it and it is far better now. I can't wait to see it mature over the coming years. In just a few months, it has opened up nicely. Anyway, you won't get it for a grand but you can get his student model for a great price and you can get a monster mandolin without breaking the bank.
Skip has been a good customer of mine and while I've never acually seen one of his mandolins in person, they certainly seem to be the real deal. I'm not sure the price but I know it's right down there. The web site has a sound clip and there's a link to some youtube vids, have a look.

Malone, NY may have more luthiers per capita than any other city in the world, but then again it is the final resting place of Orville Gibson.
I love my new Glenn as well. (It's a Student F with a couple of upgrades.) The tone is great out of the box and I'm anxious to build some time on it.
(NFI here, either.)
