Re: KM900 neck heel question
It just came to my attention which mandolin this is. I worked on it a few months back. Installed a CA bridge, scooped the board, fret dress and setup. It was a nice example and I don't recall anything wrong with the neck joint. While it sure looks like the finish is cracking in the images, I would say that it is probably fine. :)
Re: KM900 neck heel question
In the first photo it appears to have a hump around the 11th to 14th fret. If it does have a hump there that is another reason for concern of a neck pull. By the way, super photos. Wish I could post them that good.
It's amazing what free advice you can get from this forum.

I think it's just barrelling distortion from excessive close up. If it were really humped like that, the patched heel block would be the least of Greg's worries!

If Robert's worked on it like he says,i'd trust his word on it.He's also there for advice if anything serious does go wrong with it,

Re: KM900 neck heel question
Since KY`s advertisement says"One piece neck" I would think the dealer would have caught this one, Maybe you all think it doesn`t matter but it would to me, if anything goes wrong with this down the road the dealer or Ky wouldn`t honor a warranty would they?...I don`t know if they sell "seconds" or not but this looks like it might be one...
I`d sent it back real quick like....

Re: KM900 neck heel question
I had a KM1500 that looked perfect upom purchase. However,, after a few months,,I noticed the
same type of distinct line beginning to appear, showing a 2 piece heel.
I sent some pics. to Dennis @ the Mandolin store where I bought it, and He asked for it back and immediatly
replaced it. Maybe it;s a process that Kentucky sometimes uses, but I don't think you could sell it looking like that
and get a decent return on your investment. I haven't seen this condition on American made mandos,, perhaps we could here from
some of our builders on this.
Re: KM900 neck heel question
Some builders might do it but cover it up with black or dark finish so it isn`t noticed, maybe that is why Ky changed to a darker finish on the later KM-900`s....Just saying...
