I've found that the wide grain topped sheraton browns are the best sounding of the gibson oval A's..in my opinion..

Just for a hoot I audio recorded my '22 sheraton brown gibson A-2. I use J-75 strings and a cumberland acoustic bridge...I used very little reverb...

Try a set of j-74's..What you are using may just be too light for the mando..I use j-75's myself on a '22 A-2,no problems.
