I always wanted to learn this one, and I saw it on a Butch Baldassari DVD (Mandolin Workshop). This is pretty much what he plays, the tab and everything is on the DVD. This is an Old Time tune, and it's a little unusual in that there are 6 parts, although they're all quite simple. It's a fun little tune to play round and round. I had the mic set a bit too high so there's a bit of distortion, I'll try to redo it when I get a free moment.
Classic Old Time tune. Sounds alot like Ride Old Buck To Water on a Gid Tanner LP I have.
I've always wanted to learn to play this tune as well, it is a lovely tune!!!! I'll try to work on it one of these days... it has 4 parts though... where do you get the other 2 from?? Anyway, it sounds great!
You're right, Susi, I can't count. In fact in Butch's tab it says it has five parts, and I think that's correct. The Fiddler's Fakebook shows 5 parts too. Another name for the tune is "Rabbit Where's Your Mammy", which makes it sound pretty Old Skool.
Here's a slow version:
There are lyrics: Little rabbit where's your mammy? Little rabbit where's your mammy? Ain't got time to tell you, I'm going to Alabamy. Etc. David Grier recorded it.

Like David I've been wanting to learn this. Thought it was time to learn something Blue Grassy. So, here it is with all its hair and warts. Someday I want to grow up to be like David. Gary
Hey, Gary, I'm getting a message that your video's private. Thanks for bringing this song to the top. It's going to the top of my list too. Excellent job, David, and thanks so, so much for the slow version.
Great, it works now. Really nice, Gary. I've learned the melody now, but need to work on those fancy double stops. Thanks again for bringing this one back.
Marcelyn, a friend of mine who plays Little Rabbit on the fiddle tunes it AEAE. He does nothing but play double stops all over the place. Bet it'd work on a mandolin as well.
That's brilliant. Now it's time to relearn the fingering.
I've been working on this tune for the last few weeks. It is definitely a fun one.
Sounding excellent as always...
Thanks for the kind words, Michael. I did try this out in open tuning by the way, the only thing that made me favor the standard tuning a little more was the easier D chord in the D part, but I haven't given up on it yet.
Very nice Marcelyn. I like your take very much. I still like this song and still play it on occassion. I was thinking that I might repost annually to see what [if any] improvement I might have achieved. When I do, don't be suprised if I've stolen some of your licks. I'm just that kind of guy. Gary
Thanks Gary. I'm still working the kinks out too and hope there will be progress in the next year. Maybe it's just me, but this song sounded like it should have been pretty easy. It was a challenge though.
With my Gibson F2 tuned AEAE and backed up by my little parlor guitar, here's Little Rabbit. (I tried to get some of the flavor of an old time fiddler I know who uses this tuning.) Little Rabbit Where's Your Mammy!
Ooooo, I'm going to try that again in open tuning right now! That was perfect, and what a fun ending.
It's right up your alley, Marcelyn! Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Bump. Hey, OS is it possible to re-embed your videos. Since the changes on the Cafe I can't see them anymore. I've been working on this tune again. Thanks!
There you go! Blimey, I didn't do a very good job with that, maybe I should try it again.
Thanks, OS!
I gave it another shot:
Great stuff, David. And your new mando sounds better every time, too. I just got the Butch DVD and have been working on this tune, too - in slow motion compared to yours.
Thanks Manfred, good to see you back after your trip to the wilds of West Virginia, next time you should come further south so we can jam!
Think I'm starting to finally get the hang of this tune. Thanks for your inspiration Old Sausage!
Fine performance, Rob. Great tone and tempo. Yes, David, thanks for bringing this up and providing such an outstanding example. I recently got the Butch DVD, too and have been practicing this tune up to about 180 bpm. I have already made 30 takes or more and there is always a hickup somewhere. I don't know how you guys get through several repetitions and nail it anyway.
Thanks, Manfred! Can't wait to see your "sure-to-be-awesome-and-solid-version" soon!
That's great, Rob, I really enjoyed your version. Speedy and powerful little rabbit.
Well, I feel like I have used the Amazing Slow Downer, but maybe my Rabbit is already a bit older
That's a very respectable pace for a bunny, and no bugs in it at all Great job, Manfred!
Just like I expected, Manfred, that WAS an awesome and solid version! Definitely worth the wait!
Fantastic versions everybody, Thanks especially OS for the slow version. ..... My little rabbit.
That was great, Francis!
How great this song made it back to the top. That's a killer version Rob, and at such an impressive pace. Stellar tone and embellishments as usual, Manfred. And, Francis, I don't know where to start. You're just knocking your renditions out of the park. I love it!
Superb job there Francis.
