Mr Beveridge's Maggot (Playford)

This is an English country dance from the 9th Edition (1695) of Playford's Dancing Master.

For some reason, this one seems to be the default dance tune used in most Jane Austen movie and TV adaptations -- anachronistic, stricly speaking, but effective on screen. I've used regency artwork for my video to go with that theme.

This quartet arrangement is by Michel Van Der Meiren from his website at:

    http://www.tangosite.com/concertina/...eridges-maggot

I've adapted his arrangement for mandolin quartet (two mandolins, mandola and mandocello):

    1890s Umberto Ceccherini mandolin
    1921 Gibson Ajr mandolin
    1925 Zimmermann waldzither/mandola
    Suzuki MC-815 mandocello

I recorded this country dance a few years ago -- here is an update. Same arrangement by Michel van der Meiren, but played at the usual dancing speed (previous one was slower). For the use of this tune in Jane Austen adaptations, see Pride & Prejudice (1995, with Colin Firth) and Emma (1997).

    Mid-Missouri M-0W mandolin (x2)
    Vintage Viaten tenor guitar
    Suzuki MC-815 mandocello

Very nice, I like the vintage rhythm. I tried this using down beats only, doesn’t work!
The tune link above seems out of date, I wondered is there a source for Playford in .abc?

Fine tune and a lovely arrangement, Martin. The instruments all blend well together in your mix.

Thanks, Simon and John! This is one of the more difficult Playford tunes to play -- most of them are fairly straightforward but the rhythm on this one is rather irregular, plus there are the E flats in this key (G minor) and lots of chord changes.

As Michel van der Meiren's site is offline now, I've uploaded his arrangement here:

The arrangement looks indeed quite complex, but you maste it superbly, Martin.
