An epic tune made famous by Barney McKenna of the Dubliners that took me a week or 2 to get (almost) right. It sounds pretty good on the mandolin too. ANy other versions out there?
Very cleanly executed. A pleasing tune with those rhythmic changes, and a new one to me. Your banjo sounds great!
Thanks JK. I can't say if the rhythmic changes go with the way the tune is supposed to be played, or one of my idiosyncrasies...
Abc?
The triplets sound great on the banjo.
it's a bit of a mash up between the abc below with some minor amendments I made to make it sound more like the Dubliners version, or at least my interpretation...including substituting this for the 2nd bar GEDB, G,A,BG, i think. Thanks Peddyr, I'll give it a go...
Oh that. We're usually playing that as a gloombuster late in the session when everybody is drunk or tired or both, with a miraculously refreshing effect. Thanks for the reminder Peddyr, I can't believe I've never recorded this before.
Great version Bertram. Very dramatic with the big booming chords and double stops. A different animal to my version on tenor. I will have to incorporate a few tricks. Thanks for sharing.
I took an instant liking to this tune! I've got it on a CD in my rotation of music I listen to, but have never tried playing it. Still having to read the music... but I'm going to try to incorporate this tune in my list of tunes I memorize!
Peddyrmac... Loved it on the tenor banjo.... Bertram.... Loved it on the octave!
Thanks Barb and Peddyr. They say tune names are just meaningless tags, but this reel seems to take an unusually optimistic view on emigration. Such a lovely rendition Barb - like a dear old musical box they took with them on the ship to remind them of home (tell me I'm fantasizing but that's the picture I'm getting).
Barbs, another great rendition. All so different, partly the personality of the person and partly that of the instruments. I'm glad I started this thread.
great tune, well played all, i'm working on the version below at the minute, hopefully post it soon T: Farewell To Ireland M: 4/4 L: 1/8 K: D D2 F/E/D ADFD|Ad d/d/c de f2|D2 F/E/D ADFA|BdAF ~E3F| D2 F/E/D ADFD|Ad d/d/c defe|d3c BdAd|B/d/B AF EGFE| D2 F/E/D ADFD|Ad d/d/c de f2|D2 F/E/D ADFA|BdAF EGFE| D2 F/E/D ADFD|Ad d/d/c defe|dB{d}BA BdAd|B/c/d AF Egfe|| d2 Bd AF F/F/F|DFAF BFAF|dABd A~F3|DE{G}ED E/E/E FA| d2 cA B2 dc|BAAF ABdg|faec dBcA|B~F3 EDEc| d2 Bd AF F/F/F|DFAF BFAF|dABd A~F3|DE{G}ED EABc| d2 cd ~B3c|BAA^G ABdg|faec dBcA|BF F/F/F EDEF|| sorry just realised this is a completely different tune all together, i'm a bit thick headed today after the planxty gig( minus Christy) last night and the couple of sessions after it.
