I've been waiting for this one to pop up as the tune-of-the-week for awhile now, but so far it hasn't appeared. So I decided to just go ahead and record and post it. El Cumbanchero, as near as I can tell, means "The Big Feast". Please correct me if I'm wrong. Hope y'all like it!
Big Feast, eh? I'm getting a bit hungry just listening to it. That's in a cool style, nice change of pace from the usual Bluegrass, ITM, Old Time.
This week i thought I was done early learned the weekly tune posted it (with only some minor issues. I now youve given me something else to learn. It was awesome
Thanks Dan. I'd love to hear your version as soon as you can post it!
Awesome job, Chris, you've really got the feel just right... I too was waiting for this song to be picked as a Song of the Week. Guess I'll have to give it a try since you've gotten the ball rolling. Here's some tab: http://www.instituteofamericanmusic.com/fr-freesong.htm El Cumbanchere was written by Rafael Hernandez and is considered a Latin standard. However, I only know it from the playing of Jesse McReynolds. That's the version I remember. Watch this video and you'll see why...Latin Bluegrass!
I like the almost classical sound of your version, Chris!
Thanks, I'd really like to hear some more versions... (hint, hint) :P
Chris, for a minute I thought I was listening to Evan Marshall there, great playing, fantastic stuff.......
Chris, you gotta give us all a couple of........months! Great clean picking on this tune.
Hang in there... still working on it... should have my version ready soon!
Here's my take on El Cumbanchero. It's played on a Kentucky KM600 mandolin and I overdubbed the guitar backup which was played on a Simon and Patrick guitar.
Dang Mike! That was awesome! Enjoyed every second of it.
Fantastic Michael, brilliant stuff.......lovely feel and I love the run down in this tune........
Wow mike you just make it look so easy. Its was awesome but polished. I'm still working on this because I love it...back to the woodshed
I wish I hade more time with this but Passover is coming and there's alot of preparation ..If I don't start helping soon my wife is going to break my mandolin over my head and i like this old A2. At this point it's still rough and I feel like my brain is writing checks my fingers can't yet cashHKddouGPFKk
not yet
ok another way didn't work
trying the last time
That was really original and cool! Those bluesy licks on the first part have just been transferred into my brain and now my fingers just can't cash your check yet. But it will happen... thanks for sharing. When you get it worked out so you're totally happy with it, please share it with us again. I'd love to hear what you'd do to it on a fiddle too...
Mucho kudos and much respect for the other posters of this tune but presented here for your amusement is my "Cliff Notes" version. There will be no pyrotechnics, eloquent embellishments or visceral variations, only a bare bones, rough & ready version of this great tune. I hope you like it.
David, even though you call it your "cliff notes" version I think it's as pertinent and sounds as good as everything else posted here in this thread! Nice and clean! DcDan, sounds great man! Michael, man....that's an awesome version. Great rendition! You have all inspired me to finally learn this tune. Thanks a bunch!
David, that was a very sophisticated arrangement of this tune. It has a definite Latin feel to it especially on the B part. The A part has a bit of Romanian or maybe Klezmer swing to it -- whatever it is, it's great. Your 'rough and ready' version is really all dressed up in a tuxedo and ready to go downtown!
That was great Dan & David, it's a great tune and one I will put in my 'to learn' folder!
David nice arrangement love the rhythm . The whole thing is elegant
David, Truly inspiring - I learned this and the new tune of the week while watching the Sharks amazing comeback last night. (I think I'm going to recommend it as their new theme song!) So if your youtube count goes off the charts it was me replaying your video over and over. Thanks for the great rendition! Chris
This is a wildly fun song to listen to. Great job to everyone.
Last night I got together with David Hansen, and we recorded several tunes to share with you all. Here's the first one. David has this really great little bitty gadget to make the recordings. I might just have to get my own some day. On this take, I am playing my "Frankenator," which is sort of a test bed instrument for the Mandonators I make. This one was the test bed for a number of ideas. It was my first fanned-fret fingerboard (it is functional and very easy to play, but the fanning wasn't extreme enough to make much difference), my first herringbone purfling (looks nice and I've since done a better job on another instrument), my first use of my custom coverplate design (I like it!), and a number of less-visible features. I hope you enjoy this great tune! And thanks, David, for the great backup and production work!
Nice work y'all. And I do loves me some Mandonator now and again! Scott
Very nice guys! That looks like a fun tune.
