Jim Richter's Blues Mandolin and Beyond - In-Tuition#was chosen as the title of these two new recordings for two reasons: 1) to encapture the intuitive approach I take to music, and 2) more importantly, to raise money for my doctoral work in Counseling Psychology.
I have been accepted into the Counseling Psychology doctoral program at Indiana University-Bloomington. My research focus (unsurprisingly) is exploration of the psycho-therapeutic modalities and interventions most pertinent and beneficial to the creative community. Tied in with this is also creative resistance and ambivalence (the old “writer’s block” or self-disparaging “I suck” comments). I have been unsuccessful in finding doctoral funding and hope that the timely release of these albums pay for a year of doctoral work.
While most of these tunes were created with studio grade gear/conditions, some come from practice tapes, live performances, and songwriting sketches. #This recording will not knock down with flawless performances or audiophile sound. #It will, however, share a significant chunk of who I am with you, as music is truly my native language.
In-Tuition: Blues#is blues-centric with shades of blues-based rock. Includes guest appearances by Grammy-winner Mike Compton, Tom Harold, Deke Hager, Gordon Bonham, Bruce Lockwood, JJ Perry, American singer-songwriter Will Scott, Pembroke Moreland, Scott Kellogg, Joe Donnelly, and Bennett Williams.
19th May 2013 at the Green Note, London NW1.

Country: Britain - Scotland. Style: Traditional Irish Folk.

Lineup: Nuala Kennedy (v/flute/low whistle/electronic keyboard), Iain MacLeod (mandolin), Mike Bryan (g), Donald Hay (d) and guest: A.J. Roach (v/g).

Nuala Kennedy is from Dundalk in Co. Louth and has lived in Scotland since the mid 1990s. I’ve seen here several times before, all at the Celtic Connections Festival, with a larger group at a “New Voices” concert (2007), with Jenn Butterworth in a “A Celebration of the Dewar Awards” event (2012) (photos here: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157629242987743/), joining Cathal McConnell (2006 and 2009) and as part of Fine Friday (2005). The three members of her band are all from Scotland - Iain MacLeod (from Sutherland in the far north) [who I saw with Shooglenifty in 1996], Mike Bryan (from Ullapool in Wester Ross) [who I saw with Daniel Thorpe in 2009], and Donald Hay (from Edinburgh) [who I’ve seen with Mairearad Green in 2009, the Unusual Suspects in 2008 and previously with Nuala Kennedy in 2007]. As well her usual Flute and Low Whistle, Kennedy placed a vintage 1980s Casio Electronic Keyboard on a few songs.
The latest MF5 V to leave the shop features three of our favorite things: Adirondack spruce, Sugar maple, and our ultra-thin varnish finish. The stiffness of the Adirondack spruce top combined with the hard Sugar maple back/sides provide volume, power and clarity. At the same time, the flexible alkyd resin-based varnish allows the instrument to vibrate more freely than harder finish types, which makes for beautiful warm tone, responsiveness and sustain. Needless to say, this is one of our favorite combinations. What has your experience been with varnish vs. lacquer finishes?

JazzMando What's New - We've reloaded with an order of our proprietary clear V-picks. A highly successful joint venture with V-picks in 2011, we've since offered a custom variation of an international favorite, the JazzMando V-pick.

"Similar to the shape and durable rigidity of the acetate cut JazzMando Signature 346 ProPlec, this profile lends a clean, pure attack because of a polished bevel found on more expensive custom-made boutique picks, yet at a fraction of their cost! The 1.5 mm. gauge thickness gives you power and fluid control over rich, meaty tone. Custom etching artwork on both sides gives the added bonus of secure grip and the exclusive geometrically placed 3-point backside reference dots help maintain an intuitive awareness of pick position while playing. The pattern lands on the thumb in a perfect, sensitive fleshy spot, and even though the acrylic packs its own tack stability; the etches yield a confidence the rounded triangle's wider real estate is gripped in the right place. Additionally, the hands of most players warm the acrylic material up in time, for additional tack a few minutes into activity. The JazzMando V-pick grows even more comfortable playing, like a pair of well-worn denim jeans."
The clear picks $9.95 (two for $14.95) and we also have them in blue ($14.95 each).
I decided that I ought to reshoot some of my old barns in Lyons, Colorado, terminous of the RR route that I have been shooting and not far from one of the quarry branches there. It is probably on Reese Street above Main. I found many of the old structures are gone but I was rewarded with this. Undoubtedly, performance art. And I "shutter" to imagine how I might get my fingers to fit on the frets. I fantasize that the O and the M, on the left, are for a famous area banjo maker of great skill. The rail line was an extension of the Denver, Longmont and Northwestern narrow gauge built by the Denver, Utah & Pacific. There were two quarry branches and the remaining cement plant spurs at Lyons. It is now operated by the Burlington and Sante Fe, the original Burlington & Missouri River to Longmont.

The canyons uphill from Lyons are on the way to Estes and are a choice of bad and much worse grades. I read an article about rail service to Estes Park; that is just preposterous. A grade that saw rails was the Denver, Boulder & Western to Ward, Colorado. It terminated just north of town. It was known as the "Switzerland Trail." It probably seldom turned a profit.
Music is "cheesecake?"
The following video makes the case for that, and activity that isn't something that drives our evolutionary advancement or need for sustenance. Still, it makes our live better and more enjoyable. And uniquely human.
It is an intriguing question posited. How is it that patterns of simple vibration (sound waves) can stir and move us emotionally?
Check out the following PBS Digital Studios video. Link: Why Music Moves Us
All other interpretations of the title are null and void. This is clearly an electrifried banjo; I can see an electric cord dangling from the back of the head - the tambourine end. This banjo is sooo big that you apparently need a pair of clogs to play it! I question whether the copper electric pick up equally captures the sound from the banjo's five strings.

I decided that I ought to reshoot some of my old barns in Lyons, Colorado, terminous of the RR route that I have been shooting and not far from one of the quarry branches there. It is probably on Reese street, north from Main. I found many of the old structures are gone but I was rewarded with this. Undoubtedly, performance art.
The canyons uphill from Lyons are on the way to Estes and are a choice of bad and much worse railroad grades. They were no problem for Stanley Steamers that hauled guests to Stanley's hotel. I read an article about rail service to Estes Park; that is just preposterous. A grade that saw rails was the Denver, Boulder & Western to Ward, Colorado. It terminated just north of town. It was known as the "Switzerland Trail." It probably seldom turned a profit.

Within the next two weeks (most likely sooner than later), I will be concurrently releasing two solo ablums.# This album series, entitled “In-Tuition,” attempts to chronicle the various instruments, musical genres, and musicians I’ve explored my last 25 years as a musician.#
Additionally, In-Tuition was chosen as the title for two reasons: 1 ) to encapture the intuitive approach I take to music and 2) more importantly, to raise money for doctoral work in Counseling Psychology.# I have been accepted to the Counseling Psychology doctoral program at Indiana University-Bloomington (6th best counseling psych program in the country).# My research focus (unsurprisingly) is exploration of the psychotherapeutic modalities and interventions most pertinent and beneficial to the creative community.# Tied in with this is also creative resistance and ambivalence (the old “writer’s block” or self-disparaging “I suck” comments).# I have been unsuccessful in finding doctoral funding and hope that the timely release of these albums pay for a year of doctoral work.# You, my dear friends and readers, can help put me through school with the purchase of my album(s).#
In-Tuition: Mandopoly is mandolin-centric, primarily showcasing my songwriting and unique mandolin style.# This album has 20 tunes with guest spots from Will Kimble, Tom Harold, Phil Richter, and my 12 year old son Gus.# I play octave mandolin, mandolin (of course), guitar, cello, and uke.# Tunes are mostly originals with covers of Lennon, Dylan, and Ian Anderson.
In-Tuition: Blues is obviously blues-centric with shades of blues-based rock.# Guesting on this album are Grammy-winner Mike Compton, Tom Harold, Deke Hager, Gordon Bonham, Bruce Lockwood, JJ Perry, American singer-songwriter Will Scott, Pembroke Moreland, Scott Kellogg, Joe Donnelly, and#Bennett Williams.# I play electric guitar and mandolin on this album.# The album’s 19 tunes are split between originals, originals from Gordon Bonham, Pembroke Moreland, and Deke Hager, and covers of Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Amos Milburn, Sleepy John Estes, Yank Rachell, Leroy Carr.#
The albums will be digital download only through iTunes and Amazon.# Cost of each album is $9.99 w/ a 4 page booklet downloadable from iTunes with each album.# Yes, you heard this correct, for the low, low price of $20 you will get 39 of the best Jim Richter tunes available anywhere!
