I was wondering if I left my strap (Long Hollow Softy) on my mandolin ( Weber) would I have any bad reaction with this finish? Does anyone have this combination that leave their strap on all the time?

Anyone know what this is?

Anyone play a 5-string (10-string) mando?

I'm curious because I have a few fiddle friends who swear by the 5-string fiddle - now, all of them are old-time fiddlers. So maybe that low-C string has something to do with cross-tuning. In fact, I'm quite sure that's what they use it for more than anything else - a specific drone note. But are there any mando players who are getting into this? I would think chop-barking on a 5-string mando would be totally different, if not impossible.

Jazz chords question

I was looking at Danse Norviege in the Tablature section and I have a question about one of the chords.

Let me preface this by saying I'm pretty theory-illiterate. When I play the Adim chord (as learned in the chord section of this here website), it just doesn't sound right to me when played with this song. Is the Adim an "impossible" chord to play on the mando given the amount of strings? Or am I just hearing things wrong....thanks....

Cross tuning

I've been messing around with GDGD tuning but my fiddling friend prefers to do A tunes in A, go figger. Can I dare to do it in the right key and tune up to AEAE, is there any chance of harm to my mando by increasing the tension.

For you Mandolin Brothers Store fans, there is a nice little article on page 24 of the current "New Yorker" magazine (Nov. 16 issue), describing the songwriter Robert Earl Keen taking the ferry to Staten Island. It goes on to tell about Stan Jay helping him look at some guitars.

OT Puzzler -- very little mando content

This was last weeks Car Talk puzzler. So, it's trivially easy to find the answer online, but that would be cheating.

Feedback on stage driving me mad!!!!

Hi mando folk!

I'm having serious problems with feedback when I'm playing on stage. I play an Gibson F2 which I've put a Fishman pick up on. Sometimes the sound I get on stage is amazing and other times the gig is ruined for me because of feedback. This is a real problem because I need to relax to play and if I'm concerned about feedback I just can't enjoy the gig.

The sound guys complain and say "the problem is your mandolin" but am I not right in saying that it's the sound guys job to get rid of feedback?

The mandolin is ornate and I don't want to cover the sound hole with masking tape (as I've been asked to do by sound engineers:mad:)

I'm well-used to gigging and don't make the obvious mistakes of standing too close to speakers/amp etc. etc.

Maybe someone has had this problem and and help! Thanks
