Though I've got a lot of Django and Grappelli LPs and CDs, I never followed the gypsy jazz scene and have no idea of who the current players are and the instrumental makeup of the groups.

I'm interested in ensembles that include flute. The more authentic (from a gypsy background and that scene) the better, though if the player is someone who's come in as stright jazz player, that's OK. I'd like to hear how years of being saturated with Django style guitar ends up coming out of a wind instrument.

Any leads/recommendations appreciated.

Mike Marshall with the Turtle Island Quartet

So when Mike Marshall plays mandolin with an innovative classical string quartet do you post about it in the Cafe's classical discussion area?...

So when Mike Marshall plays mandolin with an innovative classical string quartet do you post about it in the Cafe's classical discussion area? Jazz/Choro? Rock? All of the above?

Not sure, but it's an incredible combination!

I had the pleasure of seeing Mike Marshall join the Turtle Island Quartet for an inspiring performance at a private school in Deerfield, MA. The interplay between musicians was magical, the sound excellent, and the kids really got into the performance.

Here's "Egypt"

Here's a medley of three Brazilian pieces:

My cheesy camera memory card ran out before I could get any footage of mandocello action (drat!). Mike played an amazing duet of "Julie-O" with cellist Mark Summer, and wowed the crowd with a fierce "Gator Strut".

They closed the show with Robert Johnson/Cream's "Crossroads"...that's right, a smokin' blues/rock standard featuring blazing mandocello riffs, screaming violins/viola, and a growling cello...which was something you certainly don't see every day.

All that and only 5 minutes from my house!

I did a search and it seems like no one has posted this before.

It was penned by Steve Lacey, a sax player who played with Monk in 1960. He copied what it said to be Monk's advice to the band. Lots of nuggets here.

http://1heckofaguy.com/2009/01/03/th...by-steve-lacy/

Here's one...
Don’t play everything (or every time); let some things go by. Some music just imagined. What you don’t play can be more important that what you do.

Another one states, "don't play weird notes, play the melody." I'm not a jazz player but I thought you were supposed to play the weird notes (solo over the changes, not the melody). I'd think you'd want some melody then take it out there. Can anyone get into the mind of Monk and try to explain this? I'm guessing that he wanted the melody always in the improvisations, perhaps just a skeleton, but he thought it always had to be there.

Probably been hammered here before, but I must share the love :mandosmiley:

Have this in the player, and what a great recording it is. Everything from Bach, to bluegrass, to be-bop, to The Beatles. I mean, this has it all, with pristine playing, awesome tunes, gorgeous chops.

The grassiest number is I guess Scotch & Swing. Has shades of Monroe's Scotland, with a dim chord thrown in for good measure. I think T. Rice is on flat top on this number. Wake Up! is one cool tune (Dave Peters tabbed the head out in MOM). Beautiful lines. Of course, the mandocello title track, an old standard by now.

This was recorded in 1982 or so, I figure, and still sounds fresh. The boy could pick!
