Got a chance to see my very first bluegrass show a week ago.
And of all shows to see it was Rick Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder.
Played out here in Connecticut at the Bushnell Hall in Hartford.
I'd bought a ticket for myself only (seeing as I've managed no converts to the music ...YET),
and finally managed to wangle a friend (a prog rock/metal devotee)
to go just to hang out (tix were cheap at 40.00 a pop).
He hadn't bought one yet, so he got his at the ticket office.
Asked if we could sit together (ticket exchange), and the girl at the window
said sure and she may be able to get us near where I was seated originally, about 6 rows up and on the end.
Tickets were procured, and the attendant brought us to our new seats.

FRONT ROW CENTER!!!!:disbelief:

My first grass show, it's Ricky Skaggs, and here I am staring up his nostrils the entire time!
Show was awesome! Went through just about everything that you'd imagine, and by the time they got to
"Simple Life", "Pig in a Pen" , and "Uncle Pen" I was in ....ahem......might as well say it........."hog heaven".
Andy Leftwich and Jim Mills did a meet and greet afterward and we ended up getting Andy's new disc and Jim's new Gibson Mastertone banjo book (a great read, even if isn't about mandos).
They played like they were on fire, for about 2 hours,
and I'm not sure, but I think I may have made a convert to the acoustic side.

Anybody messing around with this one, off Sam's new disc Circles Around Me?

I sat down with it last night, and it didn't take long to get a pretty good start on it. Gm, Bb, and D for the most part, one spot where it might go to Cm. Really, really fun tune. There are about 3 spots where it resolves so beautifully that I could just sit and play them over and over.

I love the sweet, sad strings and harmony picking, and Scott Vestal's marvelously nuanced banjo. What an absolutely gorgeous tune - like Monroe, except with Sam' touch.

Wanted to alert all mandos out there about this interview. Hope you can tune in!

Dixie Bee-Liner - Buddy Woodward, mandolinist and co-manager of the group, will be a guest this Friday (11/13) at 11:00 am (ET) on WFDU’s “Lonesome Pine RFD” heard on 89.1 FM in the New York City metro area or via live streaming on www.wfdu.fm. Buddy will join host Carol Beaugard to discuss the band’s sophomore release on Pinecastle, ‘Susanville’.

Listeners within broadcast range can tune into 89.1 FM in the New York City metro area or online via live streaming on www.wfdu.fm. If you miss it, you can always catch it later by going to WFDU's web site for their Audio archives for the next two weeks. The show will be taped for later broadcast on WAMU’s ‘Bluegrass Country’ in Washington, D.C. Visit www.BluegrassCountry.org for broadcast times.

Each of the album’s 19 songs is a vignette about different people traveling in different cars or trucks on highways in America, all headed to or from Susanville. It’s one of several bluegrass concept records the band’s been planning and the songs center around journeys and destinations.

Any recommendations for a bluegrass christmas album? I looked at Amazon and really could not tell what would be good or not.

I have to be honest and admit that I enjoy the vocals of current bluegrass groups more than I do older groups. Not bashing, they got us where we are today, but I think especially for a Christmas album I would like something more current. I am not opposed to a various artist recording either.
