Seattle, WA
Saturday, September 20
10:30 AM - 12:30 PM, $35.00
This workshop will focus on techniques that are essential to imrovisation in American folk music and bluegrass. Instead of learning "licks", we will discover the ultimate tolls for navigating the I, IV, and V chords. Memorable shapes, rhythms, right and left hand techniques, double-stops, mini-chords, tremolo placement, and other ideas will be presented. Other chords (ii, iii, vi, II7, III7, and VI7) can have an important role in American folk music and these will be discussed. All charts will be in notation and tablature. Brian Oberlin, a solo mandolinist from Portland, Oregon, has taught mandolin to children and adults for over ten years. He is the founder of the River of the West Mandolin Camp and has taught myriad academies and clinics in the United States, Italy, Germany, Holland, and Poland. www.mandoberlin.com
